Overnight my amps just developed a buzz that varies with the volume level. When I start up a CD, the music is distant and very reveberant. I tried:
--switching ICs around, reseating etc.
--bypassing preamp
--powering the amps alone (direct connection to cdp)
--jiggling, reseating tubes
--changed output tubes
--changed power strip
--changed wall outlet
Here's my system:
Quicksilver Mini Mono
LW-1 passive preamp
LS3/5a
AH! Njoe Tjoeb 4000
Any advice would be appreciated.
thanks

Your system is buzzing; but you don't say that. You say your amps are buzzing. Can you try a different CDP just to be sure? Even a portable CD player will help eliminate (or confirm) the AH! Njoe Tjoeb. That has to be the first step.

Pigmode,
Do you live near any radioactive sources?
If not, sounds like either a Power Supply or possibly even a grounding (earth in the UK) issue. Power Supply problems can cause audible noise.
A couple of possibilities...

Thanks, Bob, Metralla. It appears that the cdp is the culprit. I'm going to try a few things before I give up on it.
Pigmode,
have a look inside the player at the solder joints connecting the phono plugs to the board. I had a player that produced a buzz/hum in the speakers which came and went as you moved the interconnects around. It turned out that one of the phono plugs had a broken earth connection. The force you apply when you push on a tight pair of interconnects can be enough to break the solder joints over time - especially if you're always moving equipment around like me :D.

MalcS,
Based on your suggestion, I just tried listening with headphones and the played seems to be working fine. You may be correct as far as the jacks are concerned. More later...
