XTC's "Hold Me My Daddy" can break anyone's heart who ever had a spat with their father.
Loudon Wainwright III's "Being a Dad" from his Little Ship album gets to the core of a father's sometimes difficult relationship with his kids.
And Loudon's "5 Years Old" song can bring me to tears too, since I live far way from my kids. Even when you aren't with them, you think about them all of the time.
John Hiatt's "Like Your Dad Did" from Bring the Family is a lovely working class tribute to the 'ol' man'.
I can think of others, but I'm on my way to see my kids!
:)
Happy father's day, y'all!

Ah, the best (or worst) Father's Day song of all:
"My Dad (Now There Is A Man)" by Paul Peterson (from The Donna Reed Show) on Colpix....;)

"Daddy's Hands" by modern country singer Holly Dunn I think is a wonderful song that she wrote for her father and is her biggest hit ever in her career back in 1986.

Didn't The Judds cover that song?

Although "Daddy's Hands" is a song the Judds could do, they didn't cover the song on any of their CD's. The original self-titled album this appeared on is long out of print as the MTM label has been out of business since 1988 but the song is still readily available on her "Milestones-Greatest Hits" CD on Warner Bros. The WB CD is the original hit version, BTW.

I'm surprised Cat Steven's "Father and Son" hasn't been mentioned. Maybe we burnt out on it - it sure was thrashed. If you can forget about that ... a great song.
Also - from Eric Clapton's "Pilgrim", the song "In My Father's Eyes" is really beautiful.
How about "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" by Cole Porter?

Loudon's song "Your Mother And I" is similarly moving and heartbreaking. One of my favorites....

Bruce Springsteen's live rendition of "The River" (from the 1975-85 box set) is prefaced with a wonderful little reminiscence about his father that brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.
Anybody heard "Daddy's Arms" by the Hank Dogs? Great little folk-pop tune in a Nick Drake mold.
"Memo To My Son" by Randy Newman.
"Cat's In The Cradle" by Harry Chapin.

Today, Father, it's Father's Day
And we're giving you a tie
It's not much, you know
It is just our way of showing you
We think you're a regular guy
You say that it was nice of us to bother
But it really was a pleasure to fuss
For according to our mother, you're our father
And that's good enough for us
And that's good enough for us

Great song ... but don't forget the prequel (if that's a word) ...
A Thousand Miles Away - - The Hearts (w/ Shep on lead)
and the sequel ...
What Did Daddy Do - - Shep & The Limelites ...
but, alas the Daddy referred to in these songs is not the one for whom we celebrate today. :)

Yep, the Allan Sherman song was to the tune of Pop Goes the Weasel:
My daughter needs a new phonograph
She wore out all the needles
Besides I broke the old one in half
I hate the Beatles!
There's a CD of the best of Allan Sherman so I would imagine it's on there.

Thank you. I'd heard that tune once on the radio a long time ago, I think in conjunction with the release of the Beatles CD's.
"A Father's Love"
Billy Crockett.
Played it at the funeral of a good friend yesterday. Not one for country/gospel but...
