Anybody seen the Ray Charles - O Genio - Live in Brazil 1963 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000641A7M/qid=1102632599/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-2211207-7229731?v=glance&s=dvd) DVD? ... how are the video and sound quality? ...

I watched part of this (http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2658055?htv=12) video the other day on Rhino.com but it isn't there anymore. It was clearer on Rhinos website.

I picked it up (you can get it new from Deepdiscountdvd. for $9.95) and it states on the cover that the 2nd set has "anomalies on the underlying video master." Sure does, there are streaks and lines on the video.

The sound is OK, nothing great. DVD is mainly good for historical significance. It's 1963 (all black and white video), so I didn't expect much. At least it wasn't too pricey.

I dunno, vintage 1963 concert footage of Brother Ray, two full sets, only one with the video flaw, and it's a Rhino DVD? I think I'd be able to overlook some video problems to see that. If I see this anywhere, I'm picking it up.

Here's one that is worth it just for Seven Spanish Angels but also has 3 or 4 other numbers and some rehearsal footage.

The Willie Nelson Special - With Special Guest Ray Charles (1985) (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000068QLY/qid=1102735607/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/102-5848584-0016902?v=glance&s=dvd)

What you said, Brother Reech! Short of going back in a time machine, where else are you gonna see a 1963 concert by The Man?

I picked this up for $9.95 at Tower yesterday. The first show seems to be a rehearsal. The audio and video are much better on the first show (actually quite good for 1963 TV) than the second, which was probably the actual telecast. First-rate performances, of course. The second show includes commercials, which appear to have been done live. The only "extras" are the three commercials, with English subtitles. For 90+ minutes of vintage Ray at his peak, this is a bargain at $9.95.

When you've got a performance this good, the video problems aren't worth worrying about. The first performance is pristine, and worth the price of the DVD all by itself. Don't miss this one.

Now that I know it includes a few Erontex commercials, I'll have to buy it! I love vintage TV stuff and, after watching the "Ray" movie, I've become a fan. Just a spelling note: this DVD is titled "Ô-Genio", but it's wrong. It should be "O Gênio" (the genius). No hyphen and the graphic accent is on the "e" and not the "o".

If this footage from 1962 still exists, I wonder what happened to other shows that were broadcasted on Brazilian TV: Stevie Wonder (1971), B.J. Thomas (1972), Alice Cooper (1974), Queen (1981), the entire Rock in Rio Festival (1985), Peter Frampton, Rolling Stones...

Think of the second show as bonus footage. Both picture and sound are worse than I expected on the second show, with video and audio noise throughout. It could never be released on its own, but as a "bonus performance" it's acceptable. But I love the commercials. If you listen to the commercial for the "Ray Charles Entre Nós" LP with headphones you can hear an Erontex commercial in the background which leaks from a badly erased recording or maybe an adjacent track.

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, though.

the first show appears to be a filmed rehearsal and the second is the broadcast with commercials. It is worth seeing for the first part if you want to see Ray in his prime.
