Can anyone here recommend a good sounding cd version of this album?

The newest issue, 6E 113-2 is an RE-1 with a sonic improvement on it or two.

...And how does it sound Sckott?;)

Sounds same as the "Forever Young" (I believe) JPN counterpart (WPCR series). If you don't want to spend the money, I believe the RE-1's are newest in the bins. I still own the 1st issue 113.

Hmmm Sounds like I should probably save the dollars and get the RE-1. Thanks man.

Sckott, any ideas on where I can obtain this one? I've tried at least a dozen different on-line stores and no luck so far...

I prefer the original CD issue. I bought the HDCD remaster and it sounded like someone used noise reduction on it undecoded (I didn't have a player with HDCD), so I got rid of it and kept the original.

Grant, is the RE-1 the HDCD disc that you speak of and is the original the 1991 release?

No. The HDCD remaster came out around 1996. Well, I have the original right here:

E2-113
6E-113-2
CD remastering by Greg Ladanyi
Asylum Records
Made in USA by WEA Manufacturing

Sounds like a definite buy.

The Jackson Browne U.S. remasters were never released as HDCD. They may have had a sticker that said so, but they weren't. The remasters that were put out (through Hold Out) can only be identified by looking for the RE-1 on the inner ring. The catalog numbers and artwork are identical to the original releases. They even still have the first album mistitled on the spine and disc as Saturate Before Using instead of the correct title which is just Jackson Browne. If you ordered the disc today, most likely you'd get the remaster. To my ears, they all sounded better that the originals. I didn't get the remastered Late For The Sky or The Pretender because I have the DCC versions.

Fans, be aware that some J.B. CD remasters have added digital echo.

Watch out!!! :(

Here's a quote from a great movie (if you don't know which one then shame on you) "Runaway, runaway"...

But seriously, why add digital echo? What the heck are these guys doing?

Todd,

Revisionist history. The early Jackson B. stuff was mixed pretty dry (which I like). In this "digital wet" world, they turned the Lexicon echo-maker on to give the old mixes that "ZZ Top Remix fake reverb sound" which I really dislike.

So.......Buyer beware!

Steve,
Thanks for the tip! Off the buy list.

Should warning stickers be mandatory on remastered CD's?

Like the way you see "Allergy allert: May contain traces of nuts" on food packages?

"Audiophile alert: May definitely contain large traces of compression and added echo"

Does anyone know where the alternate version of "For A Dancer" came from? I'm talking about the one found of the "Retrospective" promo CD and possibly the older "Late For the Sky." You can tell immediately that it's a different mix/performance because right off the bat, there's a hi-hat that wasn't there before, an Jackson Browne's voice sounds farther away and drenched in echo. Despite the echo, it sounds like Browne's vocals also came from a different take (or possibly the whole track was taken from a different take or takes).

Hard to tell Dave. Since the catalog numbers are the same it would probably be the remastered version unless they had some leftover stock of the original. The only way you can tell is to look for the RE-1 on the inner ring. Time to hit the used CD stores if you want to be sure.
