View Full Version : Time to stop buying CDs?

Up until recently I figured I was happy to carry on buying CDs despite my decision to embrace SACD at the beginning of the year. I currently only have 5 SACDs!

However, in light of recent announcements concerning the Stones, the Who, CCR etc. coming out on SACD is it time to curb my spending on CD?

I am specifically thinking of new remasters on CD such as the European Everly's Warner years re-issue program (anyone know when the next batch are out - they seem to be delayed?). I assume that any major company investing in re-issue programs in recent months would be future proofing by mastering to hi-res digital before downsampling to 44.1KHz/16-bit for CD production (anyone know if this is the true?) in which case it may be worth waiting for the re-master to appear on SACD (or DVD-A :p).

I would feel a bit put out if I had forked out a weeks wages on the latest batch of CD re-masters only to find SACD releases of the same material coming out a few months later!

There are CDs out there that may well never appear on SACD in their current form which I am still happy to take a risk on, but I have a feeling that new re-masters may be an expensive mistake......

Malc,

I'm with you here. I don't own any SACD's but I'll be buying the CCR and Who ones, initially to be played on my CD player until the budget allows for an SACD player.

The CCR and Who SACD releases are totally inconsequential releases, to the mix here...except to the obsessive fan collectors.

But it will be interesting to see how much retailers will discount the Stones remasters when they come out. For sure, everyone here, will be going to Best Buy and Circuit City to pick them up.

For all of these releases, the proof will have to be in the pudding, and how these releases sound.

If past is prologue to us here, it's going to be a toss up as to if their sound quality measures up. I know they're going to screw it up somehow.
