View Full Version : Any CD long box collectors?

Back in the old days when I would buy CDs I could never bring myself to throw out the cardboard 'long boxes'. Then a few years later they were discontinued from being used. So I guess these would now be considered a collection of sorts. Beatles, Creedence, Byrds and the list goes on. There's a few that are Hoffman connected, like Donovan and Golden Earring's 'Moontan' among others.
So did any of you hang on to yours, or did you toss 'em out?

There is the Donovan!
Funny, I miss longboxes. A chance for the artwork to "spread out" a bit and the credits on the back as well (at least it was for my stuff).
However, the shocking waste of paper and plastic was just too much!

funny, I just remembered that I have unopeaned, sealed, long box copies of "Buddy Holly FTOMT" and "Fats Domino- Legendary Masters".
I wonder if they would be worth anything sealed, beyond normal price?
I have my longboxes for "Sgt. Pepper's", "Abbey Road", I think "The White Album", "Let It Be", "Magical Mystery Tour", and "Past Masters Vol. 2". Glad I saved these - the artwork on the Beatles longboxes was nicer than the rest of the packaging on the CD's IMO. I have a few other things too, but I can't recall off the top of my head.

I suppose one could say that longboxes were the "picture sleeves" of the CD era. :)
I remember when some big-name artists were making a stink about the longboxes. Sting was one of the more vocal, and I think he insisted that his albums not be released in longboxes. To publicize his point, "The Soul Cages" was released in a longbox containing the blurb:
"You are holding a collector's item: a rare object; an endangered species. But this is one we can afford to lose - the environmentally hazardous, throwaway compact disc longbox. Only the first printing of this album will be released in a longbox - all future pressings will be shipped in a new environmentally-safer package. So you might not want to throw away this long box - in addition to keeping it out of a landfill, you'll possess one of the last of a dangerous breed."
I don't know why, but I thought that was kind of cool and I bought the darn thing and never opened it. I wonder if its worth anything at this point...
Besides that, I have a few other longboxes I kept after a friend of mine indicated they might be worth something some day. Prior to that, I never even considered that! Now I'm kicking myself. I threw tons of those things away. Actually, I made a couple of collages out of a bunch of them by cutting them up and combining them in "artistic" ways. I dunno, I thought it was a cool thing to do at the time. Now I wish I had just hung onto them...
As far as I know, no CDs were issued in the UK in long boxes. I picked up a couple of the Beach Boys EPIC/CARIBOU CDs in long boxes on import in the early 90s but that was it until just the other week when I nabbed a long box copy of the Beach Boys Christmas Album on CD!
An aside: For some reason the Christmas album has never received the same attention in the re-issue programs as the other 60s albums. I don't think it was even released in Japan in the mini-LP sleeve series :(. It's a shame as there are some amazingly good vocal performances on there.....
The First Rule Of Collecting...Anything!
Always KEEP the thing that is MOST LIKELY to be thrown away by the average consumer!
The Picture Sleeve is worth more than MOST 45s.
The BOX for any toy: 60s GI Joe, Tattoo Barbie...doesn't matter!
Wrappings, stickers, inserts, posters...KEEP EVERYTHING!
What were we talking about again?
Oh yeah, I kept all my Longboxes! I have ALL The Beatles boxes, except Yellow Submarine. Anthology 1 & 2 had longboxes. #3 had a "short" long box (at least mine did).
Yellow Submarine Songtrack wasn't released with a longbox was it?

It depended where you bought it, like WalMart, etc.

The species was long dead by '99. :)

I kept my Beatles long boxes for years but eventually got tired of trying to keep them safe and finally cut them down to the album cover pictures. I guess I should have framed them when I first got them but I would have felt like a real "Bea-tard". It seems like all of a sudden without touching them they were all dented, warped, and all the edges scuffed.

I didn't keep a one, but I do miss the days of the longbox.

I'm sure nobody will be surprised to learn that I have a couple big boxes full of long boxes hidden away in a closet. I never throw away anything.
Didn't the Sgt. Pepper long box have all the cutouts printed on it, from the insert that came with the vinyl LP?

Ha! Me too... I bought one and never opened it! Still sitting in a box somewhere in the garage, along with a few Beatles CD3's that I never opened.
Pretty silly, eh?

As for Sgt Peppers - you should all be ordering the UK version of this - I presume it still comes with the slipcase and the inserts. The US booklet (on page 26) still mentions the inserts as being on the outer box. The UK version includes them as part of the booklet (a folded final page) and also had a slipcase. Any UK forum viewers able to confirm that this is the current version?

I have a couple of boxes in the attic full of long boxes. It's been a few years since I looked through them. I cut a few up to use as covers for cassettes I taped for the car (these were the days before scanners and color printers remember).
Telefunken: are all of yours still in the plastic wrap? I noticed a few in your picture with orange stickers (price tags?).

I LOVE longboxes! Another thing I miss about the 80's...:(
I have about 30 longboxes, and the CD's are still inside- though they are opened. My brother has all of the longboxes for CD's that I took just the CD's jewel cases of. I am now in the process of trying to get them back (slowly)...including the Hoffman (hopefully) "Who's Next" and an original "Aja" longbox.
Some of the ones I have I kept for collectibility purposes and am very glad I did, including Traveling Wilbury's "Volume 1", Steve Miller Band "Circle Of Love" (always a favorite of mine), Bonnie Raitt "Nine Lives" with still shrink-wrapped with a CD+G sticker on it, and ...um.."Body Count" with "Cop Killer"!
Remember that they used to have a flap that could be opened and re-closed easily, but then they started gluing the bottom shut, so they you'd end up ruining the flap if you weren't careful. I spent hours carefully prying the two flaps apart with a safety razor-blade, trying to get them perfectly seperated..what a pain!

I think about half of them are still in the shrink wrap.

As a certified obsessive-compulsive, I collect everything. Well from the start as I bought CD’s I would neatly open the boxes and fold them flat. At one point I had amassed about 1200 of them. Then about 7 years ago I saw an ad in Goldmine of a guy looking for a couple of longboxes, well I made contact and he landed up buying about 300 of them for $500. My wife was amazed. I still have about 600 or so including all the Beatles, Hendrix etc.

I kept my long boxes for several years, but got tired of hauling them around at one point. So I cut them up and made some poster-size collages out of them. I think the collages are still in a closet somewhere.
I kept a few intact for "collectors" sake:
- Paul McCartney - Unplugged: The Official Bootleg
- Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Arc-Weld (triple-size long box!)
- Pink Floyd - The Wall (MFSL)
- The Who - Quadrophenia (MFSL)
- Sting - The Soul Cages (as mentioned above)

One of the stores I regularly shop in has a copy of Spinal Tap's Break Like the Wind packed in an "extra-long" long box that's at least 2 feet long! Funny idea! I wish I had one--does that mean I'm suffering from long-box envy???

All,
I did not like them....just another impediment to tackle before listening to the music. I used to rip them apart with impunity. Now, if we could only get the American record labels to stop using those highly annoying stickers that cover the tops of the jewel boxes....
Nothing wrong with collecting long boxes....just not my thing!

I used to save my Long Boxes and I had quite a large collection, but I threw them all out when I moved. :( I just couldn't take on another collection of anything, it was hard enough just to find space for my CD's and what not.

Dugan,
You mentioned WalMart. Do you have a Sam's Club (WalMart's Warehouse Club) anywhere near your area?
Everything is STILL in a long box in the store by my neighborhood. Most releases have a "generic" longbox , but oldies compilations on Time/Life, Capitol/EMI, etc have full-blown graphics on their long boxes!
