It's the Kinks CD Steve was talking about on the old forum:

Yes, the early Kinks stuff can sound good. Well, not good in the audiophile sense, but at least better than what is out there now.

Try this, if you can find it:

Kinks Greatest Hits CD on PRT from England
CDKINK-7251

Came out in the late 1980's. Totally non-eq'd from the original mono tapes. Very, very close to the few Kinks tapes I've heard. Much better than any copy master at WB.

Yeah, that's it, with that really uuuuugly cover.

It's worth 20 bucks I guess, but don't go crazy now! Remember the kiddies have to eat! ;)

Too late. With three hours left, the bid's already at $51.

For that much $$$ Ray Davies would have to hand-deliver it to my house. At least I know which one to look for now in the used bins

Geez. I remember that the initial CD pressing order was 10,000 units, and that was just the first pressing. There should be plenty of those discs around.

I'm pretty sure that guy is mighty surprised to get all those bids for that disc. Probably thought to himself "I never listen to this old thing, might as well try and get a few bucks for it..."

I once found a subpar sounding CD of the Royal Guardsmen's "A Snoopy Christmas" in a dollar bin. Very cheap CD, might've been a pirate. Imagine my surprise when it went for $75 on ebay! For that much money, why not just find a good old vinyl copy? Sheesh...

Yes I agree about the prices.

And many of the copies of Kinks CD have the track markers in the wrong place.

Not much anymore, I'm afraid. Collectables reissued the CD (or a compilation, or something to that effect) in 2001. I sold mine in 1999.

How many of us passed on this disc when it was released, thinking it was just another of a zillion Kinks comps?

The exact same CD was reissued in Germany in 1991 under the title The Complete Collection. It has a different cover (blue) and some bonus tracks added to it (thus making it "complete) but includes the same mastering as the one above. I got mine for $9, but it is actually as hard to find as this other one. A better deal though, since the additional tracks are true wide stereo mixes of some of the older material, in addition to original mono 45 mixes. If I had my choice between the two I'd get Complete Collection...if you can find it.

Was that a Castle label issue or a PRT label issue? How many tracks? Maybe a track listing and a catalog number to assist in finding this disc. Also, how do you know it is the exact same mastering?

I know it's the same mastering because I A/B'd them. Exact same track listing, sequence and mastering, and the bonus tracks are equal quality. It's a fantastic CD well worth looking for.

Ok here’s a question for you all about the Kinks Pye era CD’s

There were first the PRT UK issues: (I own w/ catalogue #’s)
“Face to Face” (CDMP 8829) Stereo LP A&B sides reversed
“Arthur” (CDMP 8835) Stereo
Japan, Sounds Marketing System /PRT
“You Really Got Me – Best of Kinks ’64 to ’67” (MD35-5026) A mixed bag
German PRT Teldec issues:
“Village Green” (PRT 8.26676) Stereo
“Something Else” (PRT ?) There are supposedly some alt. Stereo mixes
“Album That Never Was” (PRT ?) Ray Davies solo tracks
“Upgraded” Castle UK Discs
“Something Else” (CLACD 159) Stereo

I guess what I’m asking if anyone knows what issues are best. I guess the consensus is the first PRT issues. The US Rhino disc was stereo of the first LP as was the MFSL disc and the US LP. There was also a 10 inch LP that came with UK Kinks “Dead End Street” that contained alt. mixes of material from the US “Great Lost Kinks” LP and a few unreleased instrumentals which was withdrawn. Can anyone fill the holes or give more info?

I was looking at Amazon.de and noticed that the Complete Collection was also re-released in germany in 1995 on the Castle Label. Don't know if the mastering was the same or not.

A couple of years ago, I found this cool Kinks EP Collection box (Castle ESFCD 667 #02044 of 15,000). It's got 10 English EPs in the original picture sleeves and a reproduction of two early concerts. The earliest EPs are mono. The most interesting thing for me is that they include some rather rare tunes like Louie, Louie , Milk Cow Blues and Holiday In Waikikki along with a Dave Davies solo disc. The sound is pretty good but the only thing I have to compare them with is the Rhino collection or the original mono issue of The Kinks Greatest Hits!

Unfortunately the EP Collection uses the "modern masters" and has the compressed sound. It is a nice looking package though.

Anyone here ever heard of Cheap or What CD's? Nice, barebones site based in the UK.

Go to:

http://www.cow.co.uk/index.htm

Do a search on the Kinks.

They list a Complete Collection CD for 6.00 pounds. It's got the same catalog number as that scan, but it's dated 1995, not 1991. It may or may not have the same sound. It came out to less $10 US, so I picked one up myself; I figure if it's been remastered like the UK Kinks CD's have been, I can always sell it for about $10 (it is a good track listing, is it not?)

Avoid all issues that start with ESMCD they are the new masters. There are some other new prefixes too, of even more recent issues, I think one is CMT. My Complete Collection says 1989 & 1991, doesn't say 1995 anywhere. It's worth a try though.

Thanks Douglas for the back cover scan...Are you saying they put out a later version of the Complete Collection with the same 25 songs only with different mastering?
