Well, he did mention several months ago that an SACD release was probably going to happen...
I sure am curious to hear those mixes. I Can't Explain in stereo!
This Tuesday is the release date for The Ultimate Collection - Who.
There is also a LIMITED EDITION 4 song Bonus CD!
Best Buy will have it for $15.99
Circuit City will be a buck MORE!
Oh! By the way, the Shel Talmy stuff will be much more interesting for us Stereo Junkies...just trying to save everyone some money on this OTHER collection! ;)

I'm still viewing that remixed-for-stereo stuff with trepidition...somehow I doubt that any stereo mix will be able to properly replicate the "oomph" of the original mono versions. But I'll wait 'til I hear 'em.
BTW, how come "Substitute" isn't going to be included on the new collection? Wasn't Talmy at the knobs for that one as well?

Well, keep in mind a lot of that "punch" was printed right onto the multitracks - Talmy recorded HOT, so there's a lot of built in compression.
I'm pretty optimistic.

Nope. Substitute was cut when the group was trying to break from Talmy. It was produced by the band at Olympic studios.

I think some of the confusion arises because of the legal dispute that arose at the time of Substitute's release. Talmy claimed that the group was somehow still under contract with him or something like that. IIRC, this resulted in two separate releases of the single with different B-Sides. This is all from memory, so somebody correct me if I fudged the details too much.

Another question: will "The Kids Are Alright" be a full-length version such as appeared on the Maximum R&B box set, or will they replicate the original single edit? ;)

I'd have to assume they will use the *correct* full-length version, which was released on the UK LP.
However, based on what I know, we *might* not be getting the hit version of Anyway Anyhow Anywhere. The last I knew, Talmy only had multitracks for the alternate French EP version (same backing, some sections have different vocals).

I have had an advance of the new Who set for a few weeks and I think it sounds great with the 24/96 remastering. Being the young age of 30 (almost 31), I don't really have the in-depth knowledge of the mono vs. stereo/single vs. album versions all the time on some of the 60s releases. But, the stereo version of "Magic Bus" was great. All the percussion was mixed in stereo and sounded really good.
