i was playing a spiritual beggars remastered import last night and was lookin through the booklet. its all in japanese exept the lyrics to the songs and some band names. frank marino and mahogany rush was in there. i never heard of them in my life so i check and see if my dad's got one on vinyl and he does. i clean it up a bit and realize there is a pretty bad warp in it. it still played pretty well though. anyhow, this stuff slays! some great guitar playing on here thats for damn sure. even some good bass lines and drums and the whole works. anyone else a fan in here? what else can you tell me about these guys and what albums would you recommend? the album i listened too is "whats next" for the record.

Trilogia,

"What's Next" was one of Mahogany Rush's later LPs, and still very good; but I would start with their early material, which I believe most fans, including myself, consider to be their best material. I would start with the UK import 2 CD set on Big Beat, which includes their entire first three LPs, "Maxoom" (1973), "Child Of The Novelty" (1974) and "Strange Universe" (1975) on both CDs. This is when the band was a trio and Frank Marino was considered to be just another "Hendrix" clone, which he certainly was not. Frank's guitar work was definitely inspired by Jimi, but he did create some excellent music himself, as evidenced on the Big Beat CDs noted above. Again, if I were just getting into Mahogany Rush, I would start with the Big Beat CDs, and go from there.

I don't know if they are still in print on CD, but the 2 Live albums "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush" (1977-Columbia) & "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush-Double Live" (1994-Roadhouse) absolutely smoke ! His guitar tone on these two are some of the best I've ever heard, and as always his playing is incredible. Definitely check them out !
