Has anyone had the chance to compare the MFSL Surfing With The Alien cd with the remastered version?
Also how does the SACD of Engines Of Creation sound?

I have the Satriani SACD and it sounds just like the master tape. Now, that's a blessing and a curse, because (for me), the master tape needs a little "work". But, the SACD sounds better than the standard silver CD...

Steve,

Are you refering to the "Engines" Satriani SACD? Why would the master tape need "work"? This is a recent recording?!?

Well, it's too bright, too this, too that (for my taste). It needs a few basic mastering fixes.

Now for you, it might sound just right, but just because a disc is made from the master, that doesn't mean that the master is going to be the best sounding thing on the planet! It's all a matter of subjective taste, right?

Just my opinion of course.:)

Engines of Creation on SACD is "hot". I have single-ended triodes and very smooth Coincident Super Eclipse speakers, and it's still very close to the edge. I would imagine that it would be easy to push this over the top with more agressive electronics (dare I mention transistors) or slightly tipped-up high-frequency drivers (like metal domes).

It's super clean and I marvel at the guitar work, but I must say it's not really my style. If we are talking about electric guitar on SACD I'd rather listen to Jeff Beck's "Wired", which has all the attack and detail required, but is not too pushy.

Metralla

How we should tweak guitar records, which were recorded mostly with ProTools. Joe Satrriani recorded the most guitarparts at home... anyway it's a good sounding record.

The differences between George Marino's and Shawn Britton's job are so subtle... no big difference! I don't know, why Sony haven't used the Mofi remaster... but they have released SWTA 3 months later.

Isn't the MFSL Satriani Surfing with the Alien disc DSD?? Isn't DSD the same as SACD?? Is that the disc we are talking about?

Tullman,

I have, sitting in front of me, the MFSL Satriani, and all it says anywhere on it is AAD. No mention of DSD anywhere.;)

hmmm... I'm holding my Surfing With the Alien in my hand and on the back above the UPC symbol it says Ultradisc II Gain 2 (and in smaller letters) with DSD. I think the plastic wrap it came in said GAIN 2 with DSD on the outside as well but I don't have it anymore. The MFSL Tom Petty Full Moon Fever had the same, as I recall.

I really like the MFSL Surfing with the Alien, but I haven't heard the aluminum plated remaster which, strangely enough, came out at almost the exact same time as the MFSL as I recall. I have Engines of Creation on CD and Steve's right its pretty bright. I'm also not sure that I like the music but I can admire Mr. Satriani for trying to do something different from what he's done before.

Thanks Drew, now that I have visual aids on, I see it too. Ignore my last post except for the AAD part.;)

So when playing the mfsl cd with dsd it should light up the sacd
light. Right?

I don't have an SACD player... I so I can't say.

No Tullman it won't because it's only a single layer, unlike the Duke Ellington: Blues In Orbit and the Patricia Barber albums.

It is one of 17 albums released with the new GainII Prioity Mastering System, whatever that means, but Tom Petty: Full Moon Fever sounds pretty awesome with the GainII and I hear so does Johnny Winter Blood, Sweat & Tears, and John McLaughlin. I can say for sure that Gun's N' Roses: Lies isn't very well done.

Now I am confused. I have Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever. It says dsd and it plays on my regular cd player. When I play it on my daughters SACD player nothing lights. I thought these mfsl discs were two layered.

No, only the titles Dave mentioned (Duke Ellington: Blues In Orbit and the Patricia Barber albums) are Hybrid-SACDs.
