I'm going to see it in a few weeks when I visit a friend in Ottawa........anyone here see it? Reviews have been great!
Saw it a few days ago. Not a "great" film, but nevertheless entertaining. Jamie Fox is great and the music is... well the music's pretty good too. ;) Story's a bit weak, but I think most here would enjoy it.

I have not seen the movie yet. However, I did hear on CNN that Jamie Fox actually signs and plays piano in the movie.

"Signing" is for deaf people. Wouldn't work with Ray, ;)

From the Chicago Sun-Times
Jamie Foxx suggests the complexities of Ray Charles in a great, exuberant performance. He doesn't do the singing - that's all Ray Charles on the sound track - but what would be the point? Charles was deeply involved in the project for years, until his death in June 2004, and the film had access to his recordings, so of course it should use them, because nobody else could sing like Ray Charles.

I just got home from seeing this. Very entertaining movie. Yes Dave, Jamie Foxx does lip-synch but he pulls it off exceptionally well. The movie lives up to the advanced word. Check it out!!!

Thanks. Can't wait.
I didn't think they would even try to pull it off. Ray Charles? Cmon.....who would dare!

LA Times Calendar section did a nice piece on Jamie Foxx, a couple of Sunday editions back. He related being auditioned for the part by Ray himself, and that he had to prove he could actually *play* R&B to Ray's satisfaction before Ray would approve him. Spoke well for the movie.

Was the script finalized before Ray's death? I'm hoping Ray was able to approve everything.

Saw the movie yesterday. Oscar material for Jamie and the movie. The movie is moving and exhilarating. The audience applauded when the credits rolled at the end! It's making me hunt down some anthologies asap! Any suggestions? Love it to include the best of Atlantic and ABC...

Yes Ray did approve the script and had the final say so on Jamie Foxx being selected to play him. The movie is in fact based on the autobiography "Brother Ray" he wrote with David Ritz.

I did...and thanks.
However, in asking for ONE Ray Charles CD...you received so many that it left me wondering more as to what is one good overview CD of Ray Charles. Don't need a box set worth and not too keen on the Ray soundtrack having live versions instead of the studio versions. I think I did spot one (a 2 CD set by Rhino). However, the tracklisting is not chronological.

Hi,
I thought it was a great movie! Foxx hit a homer w/ it and should win an award. It sounded to me like Foxx was signing many of the tunes.
Kinda surprised the whole flick only covered up to around '64. Thought they woulda done a little more on the last 40 yrs. of his life. Maybe it's b/c it was already 2 1/2 hours long.
Take care,
Jeffrey

Well when you tie in the constant flashbacks and the lessons being taught from them (his personal demons), the cut-off makes sense. Alot of the personal demons he was carrying with him were dealt with the year the movie uses as an ending point.
And yes...if they have his life up to and past his work on We Are the World, we would have a four hour movie!

Hi,
Well, if it's good enuf for SNL.... it's good enuf for the movies. :D
Nevertheless, i think it's worth repeating..... Foxx did a VERY GOOD job w/ the role. I've never been a Foxx fan and was extremely surprised by how well he handled the role. Sure, nobody can sing like Ray Charles BUT Foxx's voice is also better than i expected.
Take care,
Jeffrey

Jeffrey,
Are you confirming that Foxx did the singing and it was not lip-syched? I saw clip on Leno's show the other night and is sounded like Foxx to me.

Those places in the movie where they didn't use the original recordings, Ray Charles himself sang those parts for Jamie Foxx to lip-synch to.
