Alan Parsons has just been announced as a guest at the upcoming Chicago Beatlefest this August. Hopefully Mark Easter and I will have the opportunity to speak with him at length since we're guests as well.

So if any of you have any burning questions about his work with Wings or that other group that Paul used to play with (and you're not going to attend the convention), send them to me at: 8arms@8-arms.com (or post them here) and I'll see if we can't get them answered.

Ask him whether he thinks the quad mixes he did for Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother and Dark Side of the Moon will ever be released on DTS CD, DVD-A or Multichannel SACD, or whether he would be involved in the preparation of new 5.1 mixes of any Pink Floyd albums.

Perfect guess! I guess he could close-pin his nose for a bit! He will need a gas mask if he travels on the Jersey turnpike though. Talk about S m e l l y!

I read that Parson's did at least a portion of the album in 5.1 for demo purposes. I imagine James Guthrie would get the nod to do the mixes if the band were involved.

I'd love to know what are his plans for re-releasing / remastering / SACD-ing DVD-A'ing or whatever his back catalogue! I've been wondering if I should buy his DVD-A of I Robot - NOT having a DVD-A machine. Personally I have always felt his first six or so albums were brilliant! :) And the MFSL silver disc was miles ahead of the stock release.... I need more! ;)

And I wonder if he will take a shot remastering some of his early projects, like DSOTM. If they let him, of course! And if he wants to do it....

So if he is talkative.... great!

Thanks!

"I've been wondering if I should buy his DVD-A of I Robot - NOT having a DVD-A machine."

Unless there's been another release I'm not familiar with, the I Robot release is DAD, not DVD-A. This means it's playable on any DVD player. As for whether you should get one, it's a mixed bag, and whether you'll like it depends on how you tolerate re-EQing.

First, it sounds cleaner/smoother than the Mofi, which is the standard for CD. It's less grainy, more 3D. If you didn't have the Mofi to compare it to, this would totally spank the regular CD.

The bad part- it's been smiley-face EQ'ed; quite a bit more "pop" in the low bass, snare drums very crisp. Fortunately, with the higher resolution of the DAD format, it's not as fatiguing as the same EQ pattern would be on CD, but it's disappointing. It could've been the definitive version, but now it's just another option.

I usually listen to the Mofi when I want to hear the album, if that tells you anything...

Does he still work or have any input on anything at Abbey Road Studios?

Soeone needs to get him on the bandwagon to have Peter Mew and Peter Cobbin REMOVED from the Abbey Road remastering staff (or at least demoted to janitor) along with the "NoNoise" processing and the bad remastering techniques and have them replaced with Steve Hoffman. Isn't Alan Parsons someone that actually DOES care about sound quality.

I'd love to know more about his work on Red Rose Speedway. I think your Eight Arms to Hold You book is fantastic- but I must disagree with your opinion on that album (particularly the medley comments on p. 177).

I was not aware of that - I thought it was a DVD-A! Thank you, Kevin!

But I think I may stick to the MFSL in the digital world. I have the MFSL LP which is quite nice. One day I may try to get the Speakers Corner LP as Tom Port says it's probably the best out there!

Thanks again for your comments!

The Turnpike is only smelly in one small stretch by the refineries. In fact, it doesn't even smell there anymore from what I've noticed, although I don't travel on it much anymore. As a former employee of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, I must object to your incorrect and defamatory characterization. :D I even trained as a toll taker during the big strike. I'll tell you, it's harder than it looks. Hey, don't they murder anyone from out of state on the highways in Florida? ;)

You're quite welcome! I've coveted a vinyl Mofi of I Robot for quite some time, but have never found one at my price/condition/Ebay seller I liked, etc. If the Mofi vinyl sounds that "little bit better" most vinyl does, it would IMO render the DAD useless. Perhaps someday I'll get the chance to compare.

As for the Speaker's Corner, I have no experience with that one, but I did pick up the Supertramp Crime of the Century on Speaker's Corner that was the hot topic a few months ago. To be frank, I found it to be a big disappointment compared with the Mofi LP. So unless someone with my listening tastes enthusiastically recommends it, I'll be steering well clear of that one. Of course, YMMV, as always!
