I just picked up "James Brown Live at the Apollo-Volume II" This is a two disc set.

This was recorded in 1967 and really captures the James Brown sound. I am really impressed by his backup band The Flames. Man these guys are tight. The interplay among the multiple drummers, multiple guitars and the brass section is great. The sound quality is really very good especially considering that this is a live recording from the 60's. If you like James Brown, this is recording is for you. You can just picture him working out on stage.

I think it sounds really good too. I'm pretty sure it's remixed, but I'm moving so mine is packed away.

I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on the old CD of JB comps vs. the later chronological comps (Foundations of Funk, etc.)?

I think the old cd's have more punch or kick (I'm no audiophile so please forgive my descriptions here) while the new comps sound more warm and real. They both have their positives in a way. And you need all of them for track selection anyways. :D

I agree that the new Deluxe Edition of Apollo Volume 2 is fantastic. Absolutely the best version of "Man's World" ever - I wish it was even longer than the nineteen minutes it goes. Also definitive is the There Was A Time/A Feel All Right/Cold Sweat stretch on the second disc.

Although Apollo Volume One gets all the kudos, I will take this one and the Dallas show (Say It Live And Loud) anyday.

I will line up at the record store cash in hand if Universal keeps putting out deluxe editions as good as this one and the two Marvin Gayes....
