Tom and Jerry fans ought to head towards Target on Tuesday - their Sunday flyer (which we got today) has the new DVD set with an extra low $15.99 pricetag. Best Buy has it priced at $27.99 - I'm taking the Target ad to Best Buy to get the lower price (I have a $5 off coupon so I'm gonna get the set for $10.99 + tax)...

Where did you get the 5 dollar off coupon? Thanks for the notice, as I was going to go to BB and be happy with their ad price. Looks like I am going to Target. Now I just have to find one.

Any word on when MGM/UA is going to put out that Tex Avery set that's been out in Europe for over a year?

...Indy, do you know the name of the Tom & Jerry episode with the Jerry's Uncle that plays guitar and uses Tom's whiskers for a guitar string that he keeps breaking? If so, is it on this set?

That set wasn't restored ala the Looney Toons and new Tom and Jerry set. Jerry Beck has hinted that an Avery set is a distinct possibility down the road...

That's good news. I hope they do it while we're still young!! :D I seriously regret letting go of my laserdisc box set.

Time-Warner seems to be doing a pretty decent job of getting their cartoons released. Be thankful it's not like some companies where none of their toons are available (almost no Columbia/UPA are legitimately available, Terrytoons are pretty much non-existant, Universal/Woody Woodpecker is pretty much confined to being released through Columbia House)...

Boy are me and my (nearly) 3 year old daughter enjoying the releases from Warner Bros that are exclusively packaged by HMV UK as 2 disc sets.

I think the first 2 sets (comprising volumes 1 - 4) are exclusively from the 1940-1958 glory years although there are only (!) 102 episodes. It is a shame that it is not the complete 114 classic episodes.

It looks like the left overs are on the 2 disc set of volumes 5 & 6 but I'm not sure these will be so good throughout being mostly from the later years.....

I managed to pick up the first two 2-disc sets in separate sales at my local HMV for only £9.99 each instead of the £22.99 list price at the time . If the volume 5&6 set is on sale at some point I guess I'll pick that up too.

Here are the details (see here (http://www2.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/simpleSearch.do?pGroupID=-1&simpleSearchString=tom+jerry&primaryID=-1) for the HMV listing):

Malc - how do the prints look on those UK releases??? Are they complete/unedited toons, or are there edited versions of some of the toons?

Malc - how do the prints look on those UK releases??? Are they complete/unedited toons, or are there edited versions of some of the toons? Not sure I would know as I'm not too familiar with them....

I have noticed one odd thing - there's an episode (sorry but I can't remember the name!) where Tom goes into the dog kennel expecting Jerry to be in there but ends up having an almighty brawl with Spike. In that scene the soundtrack doesn't seem to relate to the mayhem that's going on the first time but when it all goes off again this time the music/sound effects seem appropriate. It's no big deal but is that something you know about?

The other thing to note is that the titles are window-boxed (the amount varies from episode to episode) but the actual features are full-screen meaning I certainly seem to miss some of the image due to overscan.

Finally, there are "speckles" from damage to the film (more on some episodes than others) but nothing to interfere with ones enjoyment at all. In fact I would rather watch these cartoons warts and all than have them cleaned up in the digital domain....

So, despite any failings these discs are great! The original series of episodes are some of the best entertainment ever made :agree: and it is a joy to be able to watch them all with someone who is new to it all .

Her favourite? "The French one, daddy" ie The Two Mouseketeers - she can spot an oscar winner already ;).

Anyone know if these are or will be available in North America? Also, do these have the "politically incorrect" Southern voice on the Afro-American maid, or is it overdubbed? I can't handle any other voice saying "Thomas!!" That's the voice I grew up with. :D Thanks.

The accent is certainly "Southern" - I guess that means it is the original?

Yes, that would be the originals then, thanks! :edthumbs: I saw some on TV in the early 90s on which her voice had been redone to sound like someone from California or something. :sigh: Don't know what's wrong with the original accent when white people from the South talk the same way.

Oops, just realized the original poster was from the States, so I guess it is available in North America. I couldn't find it on Amazon...I'll have to try again. Their search engine could be better. :sigh:

Darn, just found it on Amazon but some reviewers there say that on some cartoons the woman's original voice is overdubbed and that there are other bits edited out. :(

The voice has gone through a few incarnations - I think June Foray dubbed in an Irish brogue (?) for some of those particular episodes, then later they were dubbed again to a more beliveable voice...

I haven't seen the June Foray dubbed ones in a long time. The maid's voice was redubbed to a more believable voice to match the character. Let's get the set on Tuesday and watch them to see what's up...
