All too mellow for me! I mix up all of my CD-Rs (and in the old days, tapes) with fast and slow songs, the way commercial albums USED to be secuenced.

Ditto, and always start with a "potboiler" to get things moving! Never two slow songs in a row.

CM Wolf, that's a damn fine list!
A couple of years ago I made a five-volume CD set of favorite summer tunes called Summer Fun". It is virtually all 70s songs of all styles.
I'll list one or two of them later. i'm on a lunch break.

Grant - thanks for the compliment - I look forward to some of your favorites.
I like burning comps and have come up with some enjoyable ones. However, without fail, I always think of something after-the-fact that I should have included. For instance, in regards to the 2 CD soul comp I just listed, I am kicking myself for not finding room for Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher, the Spinners' It's a Shame, and a handful of others. No matter how hard I try, I end up never being satisfied. I can only imagine what it would feel like to be a professional record company producer/compiler and have to live with your own (inevitably imperfect) creations in the marketplace.
Never having been satisfied with the first Hitsville Motown box (for having left off too much essential, core material), I have been trying to compile a four or five CD Motown comp on-and-off for months now; I just can't get the damn thing right. I guess in the end, my home burning has really caused me to appreciate the fine job some compilers really do and symphathize with those hamstrung by the limitations that probably always exist (e.g. licensing difficulties, inadequate masters, lack of label support, etc.)

As radio is getting worse and worse, I have been relying more and more on mix CD-Rs to make my commute bearable. Here's the latest one to get me through the summer as well as an all 70s mix I made at almost the same time for my sister that has become a fixture in my car. I usually use an MP3 ripping program (Realjukebox lately), but rip them as uncompressed "WAV" files so I can mix and match them in a playlist and then burn them directly from the hard drive with no disc swapping.
Car Mix #9

I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby (single edit) - Barry White

I know it's probably stupid, but why does everyone call it "DO Ya Think I'm Sexy", when the title is DA Ya Think I'm Sexy"? I recall a little comment on that in the booklet of Rod Stewart's box set.:D

I took my favorite tracks from SPLHCB and MMT and intertwined them together on one disc, mostly the more 'psychedelic' tracks. Also, I like ending it with "Sgt. Pepper's...reprise", unlike the original. I guess I was just longing for something a little different in the Beatle scheme of things. I'm still experimenting with the track order though.
Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (shortened)
Magical Mystery Tour
A Day In The Life
All You Need Is Love
Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite
Baby You're A Rich Man
She's Leaving Home
Penny Lane
Fixing A Hole
Strawberry Fields Forever
Getting Better
I Am The Walrus
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Blue Jay Way
With A Little Help From My Friends
The Fool On The Hill
Hello Goodbye
Sgt. Peppers (reprise)
Another one I'm working on is "Let It Beatle", which is taking my favorite tracks from "Let It Be" and working in other tracks from early '69 and making an album a little closer to what I would have liked "Let It Be" to have been (pre-Abbey Road and also less Spector-ish). Burned one, but I'm still trying to get the right tracks going.
(burned one as in CD-R, LOL)

I recently did a two-volume Modern Blues comp, for the occasion of having friends over than only want to hear more upbeat recent blues, mostly of the guitar-slinging variety (I usually steer away from the monster guitarists, preferring the tight ensemble interplay of, say, Muddy's classic bands, but I aim to please...):

Lots of great comps here. Particularly like Jimbo's late 70's/early 80's power pop stuff. I have a great fondness for this music and have done a couple of comps myself. To make it seem like a really great radio station I cross-faded all of the songs. I made them all one track so that you can't pick out individual songs, however, I enjoy the experience of listening to the whole thing, start to finish.
Anyone else use cross-fading?
Jeff
