Steve,

You just mentioned having worked all night on an SACD mixing session.

When are you going to be able to discuss what the secret (and multichannel?) project is? And when is its ETA at stores?

He'll tell us when he's ready, have no fear!

We can be trusted to keep a secret.

Hey Paul!

I think "the internet" and "keeping a secret" are mutually exclusive. :)

Yeah.

John O'T knows, but I'd have to kill him if he told...

It's not some fab project, but it's pretty neat nonetheless.

I'm not doing a very good job as a surround mixer though. I HATE tampering with history, and I have no idea what to do in the back channels yet. Arggh!

John O'T wants to hear instruments back there, but I don't know. It sounds so "fake" that way. Sigh.

At any rate, I'll figure this mess out soon enough, and when I can spill the beans I will.

It's not anything cool like the Stones or anything, so don't lose any sleep over it...

Steve,

Don't lose faith buddy......Bob may have landed the friggin' Stones, but the Beatles are still up for grabs!! Perhaps we could start a petition from forum memebers in your favor and present it to Sir McCartney?

Thanks, Carl, but actually I have Sir Paul's cell phone number.

When we do the LP version of "Wingspan" he will have an lot to answer for!;)

And don't forget me too! Maybe then I can finally ask him the question I've been dying to know the answer to for over 20 years about the song "With A Little Luck!"

Just curious, has anyone here heard the current LP of "Wingspan"? Is it as bright and brittle as the CD?

I think "the internet" and "keeping a secret" are mutually exclusive. In the sitcom Newsradio from a few years back, a character asked why the other one didn't pull an embarassing file off of the internet, The "Joe" character responded with, "You can't take something off the Internet! It's like taking pee out of a swimming pool." Truer words were never spoken. :)

Just picked up Kind of Blue and it seems that they took the three track and placed it unmixed into the front three channels with no rears in use. I guess that is a credible approach.

I have not heard too many older projects remastered into 5.1 or 4.1 or 4.0 that does too much for me. I find I am spending my time listening to the stereo mix.

Steve, Although frowned on by purists, I find multichannel mixes that utilize the rear channels in interesting ways to be much more "fun" than useing them for only ambience. A perfect example is the recent Queen disc which, to me, is like listening to the album for the first time again. I listened to that one 5 times all the way through just because it is so interestiing. Please be creative! The disc will have room for the original stereo mix for the purists. My 2 cents.

Well Grant it's maybe a LITTLE better ride. Not even close to what it should sound like, but my copy has some of the cleanest vinyl I've never heard!

Pretty quiet all the way. Maybe Peter Mew has figured out a way to no-noise the wax as well.

Steve... I don't mean to ask a stupid question but I assume whatever it is that your working on is going to include a high rez stereo track for us purists, correct? I can forgive anything else but the omission of that!

I hope so!

So far all multichannel SACDs I've seen so far has a dedicated 2 channel mix. I'm pretty sure its mandatory. No mix downs, just a seperate 2 channel mix seperate from the multichannel.

Personally I think multichannel can be fun or distracting. But right now its just not a serious thing for me, probably never. Some recordings can be very fun in multichannel, like Pink Floyd and Moody Blues. But those I'd just play occasionally on my home theater system. The 2 channel is in my den, now that's serious!

In any case, whatever SACD project Steve is working on, I'll be very interested in it!

Well if it isn't anything cool you might as well put the instruments anywhere you like, but as far as I am concerned I like the jam session sound where you are sitting in the middle of the band. There' nothing like it. Mere stereo sounds so fake, removed & uninvolving after that. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I like being where the notes become music. In a band, that's dead center amidst the collaboration. OTOH, in classical music, it's the maestro's position. Here it would be bizarre for rear instruments.

I always thought what you are striving for even in stereo should be that you are able to close your eyes and the location of your speakers should disappear. Thats the biggest argument to me against multichannel.

I recommend you get a decent multi-channel, invest some care in setting it up & it DOES!!!

Just need some bucks for more channels of single ended 2A3 triode amplification. Nah... not this paycheck.
