Hi there ,
I am new to the group and just love to hear that there are others as mad as me!!
I am a huge Beatles fan and am interested to know how the music gets onto the vinyl. For instance on the MOFI box set covers, it shows when the master tapes were used-there is no mention of the tapes being used for subsequent UK pressings -Revolver for example was pressed a couple of times in the 60s not to mention the 70s but all the entrys on the tape box only refer to it being used by other countries . Does this mean that the master tape was only used for the initial press(if indeed at all) and that copy tapes were used after that,or do they cut lots of lacquers and use them over the years ???.
Also what about compilations- would they chop tracks out of a master tape to compile a new master(sorry if I am being stupid) or again would they copy them on to the "compilation master".
Finally, what about Japanese pressings - are they from copy tapes???
I would love to know the answers to these and so many other questions but i`ll leave it at that for now.If someone would be kind enough to answer it would be much appreciated.
By the way , on Steves recommendation I got Uk export Hey Jude and the sound is the tops.
Regards ,
Fraser

Fraser,

Welcome. You ask damn good questions. I'll try to answer some of them for you.

You're right that the tape boxes only show foreign copies. As far as I can tell, these same tapes were used to cut domestic (UK) recuts as well. Perhaps on the back of the box would be the markings and Cutting directions.

Beatles' compilations on LP are always from copy tapes.

Regarding Japanese cuttings, of course, they are from copy tapes as well. It's all in the mastering, eh?

Glad you liked the "Hey Jude" LP!
