View Full Version : SCD-1/777ES hum question
I have mentioned this before but would like to hear input from anyone who has either the SCD-1 or the 777ES 2-channel player.
I have the SCD-1 and there is a low level hum audible from the player itself (ie not from the speakers). This hum, while pretty quiet, can be heard up to a few feet away. I've discovered that if the setting is used, when the disc is playing the hum goes away when the display goes off. When the disc stops and the display comes back on, the hum returns.
I would like to hear whether other members have the same problem as I am considering getting a second replacement unit from SONY......
Hello, anybody out there? (just kidding :D)
Seriously though, I would love to hear from those of you with either the 777ES (not multichannel XA version) or the SCD-1.
To make things a little clearer, my player emits a hum that is audible up to a foot or two away (in a completely quiet room). While it is on in stop mode the player emits the hum, in play mode the hum is there with the display on but with the display off the hum goes during playback [obviously, to hear the hum while playing a disc the volume must be turned right down. This hum does not come from the speakers but the unit itself and is not the sound of the spinning disc. It sounds like tranformer hum to me].
The SONY dealer will be calling to find out what I want to do soon so any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

If Sony claims there is not supposed to be any hum, take the unit back and have them fix it. Is it still under warranty?
Tullman,
it is still under waranty. The thing is, I got a replacement because the first unit emitted an audible hum but the new player has the same problem. The new player has a serial number very close to the first player I had so I was wondering if it was a batch problem.
Unfortunatley, SONY are not willing to replace the second player without taking it to check it out themselves. Call me paranoid, but I dread to think what they might do to the player. In my experience, engineers know less about equipment than the loving owner does.....
If others on the forum have noisy (it's not that loud, but...) SCD-1 players I may consider just keeping the player I have now - afterall it sounds absolutely incredible. If, on the other hand, everyone else has a silent machine (like my brother's 777ES for example) I'll be more inclined to pursue the replacement idea....

I have heard a tranny hum when I bump my PP300 up to 90 Hz. Not too bad, but definitely there 'at' times, as I don't always hear it. When I do hear it and bump the PP300 back down to 60 Hz, it goes away.
I might have the unit looked at if I were you.

Malc,
There is a repair shop in NYC that I would trust with anything I own . Much better than the factory service . Thier name is Analogique. I don't have their number but if you want I can try to find it.

I have a Krell 20i which needed work so I sent it in. I called Krell and spoke to a technician. He explained every thing accurately, including time of repair. In fact, he would have been able to tell me if a hum was normal for my unit and would have saved me the time of sending it in. The repair guys at Krell know what they are doing. They fixed the unit and Krell picked up the charge. My 20i has been running perfect ever since. I liked the Krell service so much I am waiting for them to produce a SACD machine. Sony, I don't know what to expect from them because it is a much larger company than Krell. You would think that they would have qualified guys working on such an expensive unit still under warranty.
Try calling a technician who is familiar with your unit. Perhaps he can tell you if the hum from your unit is normal or a concern.

As far as I can tell, my unit does not hum. I do have a denon cd player that does hum when it is not in play mode. after two weeks in the shop ,the shop claims that Denon says this is normal.:(
