I am "the guy who seems to be very impressed by his own prose."

I will not defend my ARSC Journal reviews.

I do believe that sound that is too dry takes away from the quality of the recording. Too much reverb does not add to it either. The best path is somewhere in between.

Insofar as the Garland Carnegie Hall recording, whereas the old LP and the new Capitol CD make you feel you are sitting in Carnegie Hall, the DCC disc makes you feel you are sitting right on stage with her. I prefer to witness Garland, and not be right in her mouth.

The real question in 2002 is: When is the DVD-audio edition of "Judy at Carnegie Hall" going to be released?

Lawrence,
I'm sure that no one in this Forum is going to try to deny you your right to prefer the Capitol release over the DCC. If everyone in the world liked DCC best, Steve would be way too busy.

I want to take this opportunity to ask you about "When You're Smiling." You mention in your footnote that the LP is 17.19% faster than the CD, which is properly pitched. I believe the correct figure would be 14.68%, based on the times. That is, the song on the LP would seem to be 14.68% too fast. The CD version of the song, it would be right to say, appears 17.19% slower than the LP's, based on the running times.

But anyway, this can't be. It seems to me there must be something edited out of the LP song to account for the 27 second difference. Because we're talking about two and a half semitones, when we're talking 14.68%. There is just no way the record could have had it that much sped up; it would sound ridiculous. I bet they cut out a passage or two somewhere to account for most of the 27 seconds. I don't have either release here with me so I can't check them myself.

Thanks, Steve.

I certainly do hope that it is alright to express an opinion here without people taking it personally. I love for people to disagree with me.

Any ideas about DVD-audio?

Sure, express your opinions, of course!!!!

I hope Capitol gets ANY Judy project in the works, I don't care if it's on an Edison Cylinder.:D

If you send the webmaster your address, I will make sure you get a copy of our new "Judy In Love" / Judy "Alone" CD when it is ready.

Warning: On my version of "Judy In Love", she is going to be sitting in our laps!

Dear Paul,

I based the time for "When You're Smiling" on what is indicated on the first LP of the Deluxe Limited Edition issued by Capitol in 1961. That is, 3:05. There is no time indicated in the brochures, covers or discs for both the DCC or the Capitol editions, so I had to do the timing myself.

I agree with you fully that it seems impossible that there is a 27 second difference between LP and CD. I listened to the LP a million times when I was younger, and it just doesn't seem to me - at least from memory - that there is anything missing compared to recent CD releases. I will have to check this out further.

Thanks so much for your remarks.

Uh-oh. The last time she sat on anyone's lap, she was being cross-examined by Maximillian Schell.
