This is the same DVD that was released as a part of the box set of George's Dark Horse CD's last year. Now it's coming out on its own, and if you couldn't get the box, you'll definitely want to get this version. The live in Japan footage is worth the price of admission alone.

Harrison DVD to Be Released Nov. 2
Wed Sep 22, 2004 03:22 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Capitol Records on Tuesday said it will soon release a new DVD with performances by George Harrison as well as archival footage featuring the ex-Beatle talking about his solo career and formation of his label, Dark Horse Records.

The 75-minute DVD, included in Capitol's recently released Harrison boxed set, "The Dark Horse Years, 1976-1992," will be released individually in the United States on Nov. 2.

The film sports seven music videos for such tracks as "Got My Mind Set on You" and "When We Was Fab" and four live clips from Harrison's 1991 Japanese tour with Eric Clapton ("Taxman," "Cloud 9," "Devil's Radio" and "Cheer Down").

Also included are three extracts of Harrison performing in the 1986 Madonna film "Shanghai Surprise" and studio clips of the artist dueting with Vicki Brown on the title song. Elsewhere, Harrison discusses his solo career and the motivation for forming his Dark Horse label.

The DVD also includes a booklet with rare photographs and a history of Dark Horse Records written by Harrison's widow, Olivia Harrison.

Harrison died of cancer at the age of 58 in November 2001.

He was responsible for such Beatles hits as "Here Comes the Sun," "Something" and "Taxman." His post-Beatles hits included "My Sweet Lord" in 1970 and "Got My Mind Set on You" in 1987.

After forming Dark Horse, he released his first independent album, "Thirty-Three & 1/3," followed by several other solo albums. Last February, Capitol Records released all six albums digitally remastered.

Capitol Records is a unit of EMI Group Plc .

Did the label go away after '92? What about the last album? The video for its single is very endearing.

Another blown opportunity to include the videos for Blow Away and possibly All Those Years Ago (if clearance of the Beatles footage not owned by Apple could be obtained) to make the set complete. Would also have given those who already own the box a reason to purchase this.

Duly noted, but I can't say I'm all that upset over not having to buy this one again just to get a couple of loose clips.

Since I never pass on another shameless attempt to promote myself, here's the link to my review of this DVD:

It half pisses me off they're putting this out separately, as I might've waited for the box if I'd known that. But probably not - I like having a complete GH collection now, and the DVD cost very little based on that proposition...

Eh, I kind of figured this'd come out on it's own eventually, and I bought the box anyway. Looks nice on my shelf, I've got some great music to go with it, and I got to see the DVD back in the spring.

Brainwashed isn't considered a Dark Horse release. Harrison had a new "OM" imprint done for the earlier reissue of All Things Must Pass, and it was used again for Brainwashed.

Hmm... I do have the "OM" logo on All Things Must Pass and the 2002 "My Sweet Lord" single, but I have "Dark Horse Records" on Brainwashed.

I think the reason why they didn't include any Brainwashed material in the boxed set/DVD is because they were solely focused on stuff from the Dark Horse/Warner deal that had been out-of-print for more than a decade.

Well, not having Brainwashed in front of me at the moment, I couldn't check in advance, you're probably right. I've edited my original post to get rid of the erroneous info.

I will buy this since I only bought Live In Japan, George Harrison, and 33 1/3. It was such a good deal on the individual titles at Best Buy that I didnt buy the box. I think that double live album was about 13 bucks and a sacd hybrid to boot! If I see a good price on the other Harrison Darkhorse stuff I may spring for them when this dvd comes out.

I didn't buy the box set. Figured the DVD would eventually be released by itself. :righton:

I enjoyed this DVD but I'm still confounded over the glaring omission of "Blow Away". It's a great early video that deserves to be included in any Dark Horse video compilation. I have a clean dub from a 3/4" original but, still...it should have been on this DVD. Has anyone heard why it was excluded?

Mike, I happen to think that George looks ghastly in that video...which might have something to do with its exclusion.

I guess we should appreciate the fact that the stand-alone DVD is identical to the one included in the box set, and that they didn't make us endure the angst of debating whether to buy or not because of some tiny - but oh so necessary - content not included on the original.

(Hopefully I haven't spoken too soon or jinxed it.)

I do not understand why anyone would be up set that this DVD is coming out now. I knew that is would be released on its own a year or so after the box set came out. That is why i did not spring for the Set. I got a few of the cds when they came out (priced 9.99 I might add) and filled the rest of the gaps up with used copies. The one thing I have learned in this new age of Cd remasters and Dvds is..WHERE THERE IS A WAY TO MAKE A BUCK..RELEASE IT AND THEY WILL BUY!!!!

So far i have not been wrong. I agree that they missed a chance to inhance the new DVD with some more vidieos..but since I did not buy the Box I guess i am happy.

If record companies don't release the DVD, people will make copies with their DVD burners and pass them around.

What's surprising, is that when the Harrison box set was released, they didn't hold off on the releasing the single remastered CDs for a year too.

With the Paul Simon box set, what's the advantage of buying the complete set? The only extra was the cardboard box? The single remastered CDs will be available and might be available from the record Clubs. Just like the Dylan box.

Just watching the Dark Horse DVD, have not seen some of these filmclips at all, let alone for many years. Love the backflip off the couch :p

Is that really Elton in the "Fab" film clip walking past or a look-alike? I also noticed Jeff Lynn, Jim Keltner (yes?) and of course Ringo, but did I miss anyone else?
