In another thread I said I would make a list of records I have that sound great but I see no one talking about them. If I put any records that are infact talked about sorry, I don't read that much of the audio press since the underground journals turned into the mainstream journals. Some of these are very obscure and hard to find. Sorry again about that but maybe that is why no one talks about them.

1. Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Shaka Zulu. Warner Bros. WB 25582-1
Most of you know this group from Paul Simon's Graceland LP. They were the vocal harmony group. I had the incredable experience of hearing this group live and unamplified at a church in Soweto. Goosebumps and tears, that's all I have to say about that. This solo record is the best sounding one I have heard of this group. They sound very much like they do on Graceland here. It is rich, full and detailed sound with lots of reverb. It's not the real thing ( but it never is) but it captures much of the magic.

2.WOMAD talking book, WOMAD 002
I bought this at a Peter Gabriel concert. It is a compilation of world music. The sonics are mixed but the good cuts are really good. Very raw sound.

3. Anthony Phillips, Antiques private parts and pieces 3. PVC 8908
4. Anthony Phillips, A catch at Tables private parts and pieces IV. PVC 8919
5. Anthony Phillips 12. PVC 8926
Anthony Phillips was the original lead guitarist and a founding member of Genesis. He left the band just as they were making it big. He had a few solo albums on Passport but I don't care for them to much. He sings on them. his singing reminds me of the story about Peter Gabriel being asked to join Genesis just because Anthony Phillips was singing lead and everyone in the band thought he stank at it.
Anyways about these albums, they are all instrumental, mostly guitar. They vary from cut to cut and album to album in nature but they are consistantly excellent in sound. I like the music as well. Antiques is particularly excellent. Very clear guitar sound but very warm with nice reverb. If you like guitar music by English progressive rock players you might like these albums.

6. Jean-Pierre Rampal & Lily Laskine, Sakura: Japanese melodies for flute and Harp. Columbia M 34566
This definitely isn't music for everyone. I like eastern music, if you don't, walk away.
The sound is very mellow on this one but not soft. Nice ambience too even if some of it is vinyl echo.

7. Patrick Ball, Celtic Harp, the music of Turlough O'Carolan. Fortuna FOR LP 005
Again this music is not for everyone. The sonics are pretty amazing. Very clear like a direct to disc and very dynamic. The harp is in the room with you. Not particularly warm sounding with very little reverb. the reverb isn't really missed though because of the big up close sound of such a complex sounding instrument. I think the lack of reverb also adds to the " it's in the room with you" effect. Great demo disc.

I'll continue this list later if anyone is interested. I have some more popular artists on the second part.

Scott, interesting thread. The Ladysmith sounds interesting, I will have to check that out.

I played cuts of Ladysmith for my students. Everyone really liked this group.
