I decided to do the CD to CD comparison first; hopefully, I will do the LPs tomorrow.

The issue that I have had with Castle/Essential UH remasters on CD (regular jewel cases - I haven't heard the mini-LP versions and I'm not even sure they exist;)) was their brightness. Perhaps they thought that previous Castle CDs were not "punchy" enough (all right, they weren't) and decided to give the consumers what they want :D

Salisbury (JPN JVC/Victor VICP-61829 vs. Castle/Essential ESMCD 317)

The Park - on the Jpn CD, it is finally not the "shakred rocksh and shtones", but almost how it should be. Better soundstage, deeper bass, and vocal overlays sound, hmm, prettier, for lack of a better word. The Japanese Cd is a clear winner in my estimate.

Lady In Black - on the Jpn CD, the Lady is not shrill or lightweight, but turgid, juicy and suitably bottom-heavy ... ;)

Note to Gorts: if the previous paragraph seems politically incorrect, please delete or edit at your discretion;)

The Magician's Birthday (JPN JVC/Victor VICP-618230 vs. Castle/Essential ESMCD 339)

Spider Woman and Blind Eye - again, Castle CD sounds rather shrill compared to the Jpn; the latter seems to have both deeper and wider soundstage; I never could really listen to Blind Eye on the Castle CD because of the aggressive acoustic guitar and cymbals. The Jpn disc keeps things more consistent, with no HF artefacts sticking out;)

Rain - not much difference there, except for silkier vocal presentation that seems to be located deeper into the soundstage.

The booklet provides no remastering credits for the Japanese CDs. Unlike JVC's jazz reissues, the discs are housed in paper, not plastic sleeves. Not good for the CDs, but on the other hand they replicated original LP sleeves with lyrics and such.

These comparisons are actually fun, so I might continue:).

Please do, as I'm going to be buying some UH myself and it's good to know this. From what I've discovered, at least here anyways, is that there are only a few UH albums recently remastered in Japan. Any comments? Can you be more specific? Here a link to what I can purchase, can you maybe tell which ones you are referring to by catalogue #? With all of their re-issues/remasters, it's kind of confusing. THX

At this point I just don't want to be ordering the wrong ones.;)

From what I've seen on the HMV page, these are the Castle/Essential remasters (cat #ESMCD). It is funny they list those as released in March 2002. I've had the CDs with these exact catalog numbers (Salisbury - ESMCD317; Very "Eavy, Very "Umble - ESMCD316) at least since 2000.

Those are the ones that served as the "before" exhibit in my comparison exercise;).

Cat #s for the new Japanese CDs can be found at the JVC/Victor Uriah Heep page (http://www.jvcmusic.co.jp/rock/artist/uriahheep/). It is in Japanese, but they have album and track names, and catalog numbers in English. Also, I listed the numbers in the previous thread that I started on these UH CDs.

I think I'll post the sleeve pictures here:

As for the actual store, I don't know if it is any good or bad.

Thanks SVL!:D

Sometimes, a picture is worth a thousand words, especially for me!;)

Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble (JVC/Victor VICP 61828 vs. Bronze LP 28763 ET - 1977 German (Ariola) re-release)

Listened to Side 1 only, and I couldn't match the volumes with a lot of precision.

Still, the LP generally sounded sweeter and more mellow, and the CD was more robust, with a little better instrument separation and wider soundstage. On Come Away Melinda, the vocal was really hard to the left, sounding like a meter away to the left from the speaker;). On Walking In Your Shadow, which is a harder rocking track, I clearly preferred the LP though.

The CD may be a little brighter, but not nearly as bright as the Castle/Essential remaster, which I do not have any more, but remember fairly well.

The bottom line of these tests for me is that I'm getting rid of Castle/Essential (UK) CDs, but I'm keeping the vinyl.
