Paramount set September 7th as release day for STAR TREK: GENERATIONS, Collectors Edition, but sometime late last week withdrew the title. Apparently, from what I've read on the Home Theatre Forum, the set was initially going to include a theatrical trailer that used music from Holst's THE PLANETS. Once it was discovered by Paramount that they didn't own the rights to that, they scrubbed the trailer from the extras. But someone didn't get the message in the artwork department, since the package lists the trailer. That's the theory as to why it was pulled.
Since the withdrawal came so late, many of these have hit store shelves anyway. Yesterday, I checked the local Best Buy, since it was reported that they had them on shelves in some stores. The employee there tokd me that they had it in, but crated them up and sent them back. Down at the other end of the same shopping center though, Borders had five of them on the shelves, which is where I picked mine up.
Many dislike GENERATIONS, I happen to think rather highly of it, despite its flaws. This is the first anamorphic release of the film on DVD in region 1. The prior edition here was non-anamorphic.

Fortunately, they've promised to get this one back out as quickly as possible. In the meantime, you've got a nice little collectible. Hopefully though, no one will waste big bucks on eBay for one of these, just because of a mistake in the box credits.
Paramount's already announced September 28th as the new release date.

I wouldn't spend big money for it on eBay, but heck, if I'd known, there are enough eBay suckers out there that I'd have bought a few just to resell. (Eeeevil, I know.

What I find interesting is that I had thought most classical works were in the public domain...unless it was the performance they were not authorized to use. FWIW, my favorite recording of "The Planets" is the Telarc (

A bit of trivia....I work as a production planner at a printing company...a few months ago, we printed 3 million DVD sleeves for Star Trek:Generations...2 weeks ago, we got in a rush order to reprint the entire run, and ship it out over a single weekend...all for changing 3 lins eo type in the "special features" menu!

Interesting! All this over a trailer!
To respond to Rudy's preference for a version of THE PLANETS, check out mine, the 1971 version on DGG by William Steinberg and the BSO:

I've heard dozens of Lp and CD performances of this one, but Steinberg's has just the right cadence; the recording is superb: from rumbling bottom to gossamer top, it has a wonderfully full and warm dynamic range. Loved it on vinyl, glad they put it out on CD years ago!

Rudy,
Think about it. When was The Planets written? It was published just like anything else from that era. Some goofball at Paramount thought it was written before copyright laws by Beethoven or something...

BJ's is actually BJ's Wholesale Club. There is a membership fee and many items are sold in "larger" quantites. I would guess that Sam's club is similar. BJ's also has their own line of products, sold under the name Berkley & Jensen.

1914-1916. Wasn't sure if copyright came into play that early or not, or if it had expired.

I don't understand. Why didn't they slingshot around the sun, and not release them?
