Here's a decent white paper presented to the AES on how consumer digital playback equipment handles the "reading" of clipped (+0dbfs) digital recordings. While kind of only distantly related to the recent discussions we've had on the "loudness wars" in cd mastering, the authors present a pretty good case for engineers keeping their peaks below -3dbfs when recording or mastering. It's a very technical article, but a fascinating read, IMO, that many might find interesting.
