View Full Version : My Randy Newman dilemma tomorrow!

As I'm sure many of you know, tomorrow Rhino releases remastered and expanded versions of Newman's Sail Away and Good Old Boys. I have the original CDs of those titles, but I also have 12 Songs. Therein lies my dilemma: I would hate to look over my collection (which I do several times a week) and see the old 12 Songs sitting alongside the new Sail Away and Good Old Boys. Anybody here fret about things like this, or am I the only loon?

BTW, I don't know if Juan Borras is still around, but I remember an old thread of his about the Newman remasters. I hope if he listens to them he will then post a review on this forum. Same for anyone else who picks them up.

Thanks.

Why don't you keep your old copies of Sail Away and Good Old Boys even after you buy the new ones, and then your old 12 Songs can sit next to them. Given Rhino's track record and the fact that the old Warner cds of Randy's albums sound pretty good, I would say it's likely that the remasters will be inferior in sound quality to the versions they're replacing. So you will need the Warners for best sound and the Rhinos for the bonus tracks.

Great idea! This is the ONLY choice we have these days! :(

Czeskleba and Gary,

Thanks to both of you, but I'm not into the bonus-tracks thing all that much--even with the artists I care most about! Unless I hear tremendous things about the remasters, I think I'm just going to stick with my old CDs. Then, if Rhino does decide to address 12 Songs at a future date, I'll reconsider the whole thing.

Also, taking no action now will relieve me of considerable stress when inspecting my collection! Thanks again.

Randy Newman is on the Musicians program on the Bravo channel tonight (Monday) at 10 p.m. Should be good.

The normal stock issue of "Sail Away" sounds very true to reel to me. I'd keep your stock issue before you think of getting rid of it. I can't see where they would improve the sound much...

We're stuck between 2nd and 3rd tape generations cut/mastered flat or 1st or 2nd generation tapes EQ'd for tone deaf donkeys.

Hoo boy.

Sckott,

Sail Away AND Good Old Boys both sound fine to me. 12 Songs I'm not so crazy about, but it may just be the master tapes. Anyone know if that's the case?

Jason quotes:
"BTW, I don't know if Juan Borras is still around, but I remember an old thread of his about the Newman remasters. I hope if he listens to them he will then post a review on this forum. Same for anyone else who picks them up."

Aren't Jason R. Baur and Juan Borras the same person???????????????????!

Rearrange the letters and the "truth" will be revealed!

Or is this an amazing coincidence Jason?!

:D :D ;) :D :D

LOL! If we listen to those "1st or 2nd generation tapes EQ'd for tone deaf donkeys." We'll all be deaf just like those tone deaf donkeys! Good one Sckott!

Odd though it may seem, Pat--and believe, I'm shocked to see it myself-- it's an utter coincidence. Kinda reminds me of the old Jim Morrison/Mr Mojo Risin anagram, though.

Ah yes, Jon. You know him? He's a good friend and--depending on how things go from now on--a possible future member!
