I don't know if anyone else has checked this LP out from 1988 by Rhino (CBS Special Products), but it really is not bad.

I see the letters DMM in the run out groove so it may be a Direct Metal Master.

It also has Bill Inglot's name on it and I have read here that many don't like his style.

It is not as smooth as Steve's DCC remaster, but it is actually very good and clean (no grinding, very few pops).

The Rhino contains Roy's Sun mono recordings, plus two later ones, but is missing Shadoroba from the DCC LP. It has more high end and a little less bass than the DCC, and certainly does not have the 'Breath O' Life'.

The cool part is that you can get it for $12 sealed as a cut out. Do a search at Acoustic Sounds for 'Orbison' and you get two catalog items. The DCC for $150 (wow) and the Rhino for $12.

Have fun!

I have the CD version, and while it isn't Hoffman-caliber, I've never had occasion to look for anything better. Still one of the best-sounding Rhinos CDs in my book. And even if I did want to upgrade, I sure wouldn't do it for $150!

BTW, Loud Listener, are you one of the vinyl-only forum members? Just wondering whether I wasted both my time and yours with this post.

Loud Listener,

Does the album liners say if it was remixed? The CD was, and that may account for some differences you hear in sound quality.

I have a lot of MFSL and DCC CDs as well as vinyl. I like them both.

My last favorite great sounding CD I liked was Diana Krall - The Look Of Love. Very well recorded.

Yes. Remix Enigineers: John Strother and Bill Inglot at Penguin Records.
