I put on MTV, VH 1 and was amazed and saddened. What I basically observed was a few looped drumbeats, some groin grabbing dance moves, moaning grunts and three or four lyrical lines endlessly repeated. Comparing my earlier days which started with the Beatles arrival in 64' through the 80's there was so much diversity. A Renaissance of quality musicians writers, vocalist etc. WHAT HAPPENED? Did we run dry! Please keep the flames low. These day's it's hard to voice an "OPINION" without getting into trouble.

Michael,
please don't be disheartened and don't judge the state of todays music by what you see on VH1 and MTV. There is a lot of great music out there that is not on the top 40 charts or the video channels, you just have to be more determined to find it.

I know what you mean, I am speaking of "Today's" as what our youth are taking in as "Today's? music believing it ends there at MTV, VH1 and top 40 Radio. In the old day's we had commercial free FM and hip DJs and so much diversity. Many will not and do not "Search" for alternatives.

If it's another indirect attack on rap/hip-hop I don't want to hear it.

I don’t know guys, I haven’t watched MTV since the mid eighties and only found VH1 to be useful in the late 1990’s when they repeated Don Krinsher Rock Concert or old Dick Cavet shows. Never bought a record or sensed a musical trend though either VH1 or MTV. It’s kinda like to me bemoaning about Rolling Stone magazine; it’s been a lost cause for almost 20 years.

I saw some 40ish looking white guy grabbing his stuff in the store the other day. Some woman dug around in her bra yesterday. I saw some 40ish looking guy in a cowboy hat feeling up his wife's rear-end in the frozed section as she bent over... Mothers with teenage children wear fishnet blouses with no bra...
MTV is starting to look pertty wholesome.

What a silly post, Grant. You missed the point of Michael's original point entirely, and this is judging from the very examples you've provided.

I don'tr think so! I think Michael is going to have to spell it out to me.
My examples of public taste above was to show only that real life is no different from what viewers of MTV don't already see anywhere else. People were doing those things long before MTV was thought of.
As far as music is concerned, we are going to have to accept that this is the music our younger people listen to, just as rock & roll was what our generation listened to. Where I live, I pulled up to a stoplight, looked next to me to see where that booming rap music was coming from. There were two white guys in cowboy hats in a big Dodge Ram truck bobbing thier heads to sounds of n***** this and n***** that. It was funny!:D

Wow... it seems like this topic almost always turns ugly fast!
Please get back to the original topic, with no more "you don't get it" inflammatory statements, ok?

It has nothing to do with public taste or race, but everything to do with artistic merit. But apparently you feel that Britney Spears is every bit as much an artist as Billie Holiday, or that contemporary composers are consistently writing music of the quality of John Lennon or Hoagy Carmichael; they're not.
I suppose next that you'll be telling us that a crucifix in a glass of urine (can we use that word?) is art too, huh?

BTW, when I do suggest some older, yet great music, the teenagers just look at me like i'm a space creature, say something like "who are they" or "what's that"? and then shut me out. Then they go on about some current rock/rap group is the greatest.

When and where did I EVER say that? Don't be puttin' words in my mouth!
As foir the crucifix in urine, not my cup of tea but someone out there likes it.

Today's recording artists are sometimes instructed by a lyricist, and/or songwriter, implicit in how they expect their melodies to be recreated... I believe there is a quote from Stevie Wonder about how he is merely a conduit, instructed by God through his lyrics and performances. At one time, I think God was even considered the better writer.

Michael, I do believe that you are confusing Entertainment with Music! MTV, MuchMusic, etc. are simple TV stations that provide entertainment to the masses. It is also used to promote new product, new musicians, create another outlet for the artist or entertainer or their hired video producers, etc. Through this medium, you can discover new music, great entertainment, discover what you don't like, etc.
For example, remember the film clips of bands from the '60's on Ed Sullivan? They just stood around and pretended to play their instruments. Dull by today's standards! New videos are a great promotion tool! Britney can wear make-up and dance! Ja-Rule can look tough and have hot babes at his parties! Edwin can take a trip around the world in three minutes! All these videos are designed to attract an audience for concerts and CD sales.
BTW, I'm sure that I used Ja-Rule incorrectly as I can remember a video with 'hot babes' at a party but forgot the artist. Sorry, did not mean to offend. But another example! Who did the Thong Song? I'm sure the artist was thinking about creating the video for it when he made it!
And Grant, I don't think that people were doing those things in 'real life' before video caught up! At least I've ever seen such things! An artist has to come up with a NEW dance step, lyric, tune, whatever in order not to be considered old. They have to be on the cutting edge, don't you think? And the masses follow the artists lead! Notice all the little Britney 12 year old clones out there? Where do you think kids learn to act cool? Their parents? Naw - their heroes on MTV with the cool hair, groovey tunes, etc.!
"Groovey"?!? Oh=oh - my grey hair is showing!
