If that even IS a category. I started to do Classical, but thought it too complicated at the moment ;) I hope I don't botch the guidlines too much. :)

Sonic Youth* (Sister; Daydream Nation; Washing Machine)
Nirvana* (Nevermind; In Utero)
The La's (The La's)
Lenny Kravitz* (Let Love Rule; Mama Said)
Tori Amos* (Little Earthquakes)
Pavement* (Slanted and Enchanted; Terror Twilight)
Sebadoh (Bakesale)
Sinead O'Connor (The Lion & The Cobra; I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got)
PJ Harvey* (Dry; To Bring You My Love; Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea)
Bjork* (Post; Homogenic; Vespertine)

I'd throw in "Unplugged" under Nirvana, as well.

As for other 80's and 90's alternative music (that is, music that falls strictly under rock):

The Replacements - "Let It Be," "Tim," "Pleased To Meet Me" (the latter is a little too polished, though; check out some of the earlier, raw versions of those same songs)
Beck - "Odelay"
Husker Du - Zen Arcade, Warehouse
Pixies - "Surfer Rosa"
Meat Puppets II
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Moby - Play
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Radiohead - The Bends, OK Computer
REM - Murmur (all of their IRS albums), Automatic For The People
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness
Stone Roses - self-titled
U2 - Achtung Baby
Wilco - Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Cool list , but this thread was an accident. My original post was supposed to be in the Essential Music discussion. Perhaps you could post it thewre as well?

P .S.
Hell yeah, the Pixies and the Stone Roses Rule!
