Just saw a commercial for the 2-dvd special edition coming out Tuesday (!) in the U.S.

I almost forgot completely that this was coming out. I just spent quite a bit of cash on good music (Vintage music 1&2, Rock the First 2,3,6 and a Stereo Parlophone Help! LP).
Now I want to get this too, but I do need money to eat this week. (Or do I?)

Anybody else planning to get this?

Of course! Should also have a commentary by Marty Scorsese, too, which should be a hoot, the guy can gab with the best of 'em...

This is one of my favorite mob movies, so I'll be definitely picking this one up on Tuesday! Thanks for the reminder Ryan.

This release is actually a part of "The Martin Scorsese Collection" also consisting of:

After Hours
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Mean Streets
Who's That Knocking At My Door?

Haven't seen any except Mean Streets, which I thought was good...but I don't know if it's buy-worthy like Goodfellas. Perhaps gift-worthy

:)

I am going to give a biased opinion, as i think the man is a genius talent. Regardless as a matter of economics, its well worth the box set price in my opinion for five movies. If you look around less then $50 for five movies so around $10 ea.

On "GoodFellas" and all the new Scorsese DVDs, he appears as part of a mix of people, most of whom were recorded separately and the results edited together. It's also "scene specific", which means it doesn't fill the entire movie's running time. The only full, running, screen-specific track for any of the five films comes from the second commentary here with the real Henry Hill and the FBI agent who brought him into witness protection.

Finally, a version of the movie on DVD that I won't have to turn over half way through! :goodie:

Did the first DVD release of "Goodfellas" come on a two-sided disc elsewhere or was it just in the UK?

Also, does the plane ticket get censored on all prints of this movie - including this new transfer?

Yes I have a flipper also.

To quote someone on Usenet:

I don't know about the legalities of using an airline's name in a movie,
but for seem reason, the black bar works incredibly well. It makes the
closing of the movie seem so realisitc.

And this from some other Usenet post:

Nah, it was in the theaters, too.

What I thought was funny was you had to have never flown to not be able to
figure out *which* airline it was (here's a hint: it wasn't a foreign carrier,
it was one of the American airlines).

I've had the flipper since not long after I bought my first dvd player back in October of '98. I can't wait for the SE, but I'll have to wait past the release date. I ordered the complete set from Amazon, and it shipped yesterday, 8/16.

I was able to use DVD editing software to "edit" the flipped sides together onto a disc for my brother.

Now the question becomes, do I hang onto the flipper disc? I have a feeling I should have ditched it about a month ago, when I could have gotten a few bucks for it. Now everyone will unload them.

Might as well give the flipper away to a friend or the local library.

The Goodfellas flipper DVD may have also been among my first DVD purchases in 1999.

Amazing how fast DVD took over.

Warning may contain minor spoiler!

My wife and I watched the new Goodfellas SE DVD last night and thought the digital transfer looked pretty good.... Except for one small annoyance. The scene where Henry Hill is at his mistress's apartment (right after his wife finds out about their affair and pulls a gun on him), James Conway and Paul Cicero pay him a visit. There's a close-up shot of James (second close-up shot I believe) that a very noticeable vertical red line runs down the middle of the entire shot. Did anyone else notice this. It just caught me off guard for a sec. and thought is was a little odd to see this on a "new digital transfer".

I'll try to post a shot of it, later this evening.

i started watching it last night, but got sidetracked and haven't come to that scene yet. I was impressed with the picture quality overall.

I also picked up Mean Streets, but haven't opened it yet. Whoever said this wasn't "buy-worthy" is missing out big time. This was the most influential Scorcese movie of them all, and arguably the most powerful. It still gives me goosebumps to hear Scorcese, as the voice of the conscience, narrate "You don't make up for your sins in a church. You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is ******** and you know it...It's all ******** except the pain. The pain of hell. The burn from a lighted match increased a million times. Infinite. Now, ya don't **** around with the infinite. There's no way you do that. The pain in hell has two sides. The kind you can touch with your hand; the kind you can feel in your heart...your soul, the spiritual side. And ya know...the worst of the two is the spiritual."

That sets the premise and then you're taken on a rollercoaster ride of small-time hoodlums and sinners seeking some form of redemption in their own way. How any fan of Scorcese could not worship this movie is beyond me. It makes Goodfellas look like a meaningless commercial sellout by comparison.

I've never got around to seeing this flick (even though its been on the dish plenty of times), perhaps I should go out and get it.... Let us know your impressions of the transfer on this new DVD.

I agree the film is great, just wasn't sure about the DVD yet. Fortunately, someone has offered to help hook me up with the box set at a discount. I may have to take him up on it!

What's the cost of the box you're getting, if you don't mind my asking.

I paid $45 for Goodfellas + Mean Streets and I have a feeling the box is going for about that price in some deals.

I'll watch MS tonight and let folks know how the picture quality is. The previous DVD had horrendous audio and video...
