I saw that on a reel a pal had years ago, along with Desi and Lucy puffing over the heart credits to their show, and Rob and Laura Petrie taking a smoke break.

You can see Rob and Laura (and Buddy and Sally, too) lighting up on the Dick Van Dyke Show Season 2 DVD box set. The commercials are hidden though (a.k.a. "Easter Eggs").

I've go the Flintstone ads on a VHS tape somewhere...I guess our elected leaders were tied up with the Cold War and forgot to consider whether this was a good idea. Luci & Desi did spots for Philip Morris only a few years earlier, so although it's peculiar now, I assume it wasn't then.
For those of you old enough to remember...Did these ads really make it on the air? Really funny!

These commercials are on the LASERDISC box set of the Flintstones that came out right at the end of the LD era. To me, they make the set. It's a shame they did not make it to the DVD set.

Well, they could appear on future DVDs, though I kinda doubt it. Political correctness at its finest!

Yes, they aired. Back then EVERYONE SMOKED! Things were not as politically correct. Or healthy!

You know, the more I think about it...it really was bizzare! I mean, could you imagine today...if the PowderPuff Girls or Sponge Bob did ads for Bud or Miller? Or The Liberty Kids selling Sam Adams?
Of course, it wouldn't've surprised me too much if Wile E. Coyote hung out at the side of the road; downing a brew and smoking a cig, while waiting for the Road Runner to fall on his Acme Anvil or something!
Or was that Fritz the Cat?

John,
Today it's weird, but remember, the Flintstones were marketed as "The first cartoon for adults", patterned after the Honeymooners (as you know).
At that time, we (the viewers) were used to cigarette ads on TV everyday, It was no big deal. Everyone from Lucy & Desi to Jed and Granny did cigarette spots.
Think of it, how many cigarette ad songs can you remember? It boggles the mind.
"You can take Salem out of the country, but.........."
"Winston taste good like a.............."
"The seven minute cigarette, it lasts longer...................."
You know them all, what else did I forget??? :D

"I'd rather fight than switch?" (adding: "Show Us Your Lark" and "Call For Phillip Morris...") --- and my personal favourite: "TASTE ME, TASTE ME!" :shake:
Oh, I know it was (excuse the pun) a standard practice. I mean, in the Forties and Fifties there was a huge billboard ad over Times Squre with Joe Dimagio smoking a Camel. (I think it was Camel) I was just thinking...in retrospect it seems so bizzare to have cartoon characters (adult or not) shilling Winstons, or anything for that matter. But remember too, it was on at a time that kids could watch too. And though the Flinstones were billed as an "adult" cartoon, they were marketed to kids in hopes their parents would watch to. Which of course they did. It's just the sensibilities have changed so much since then. You have to admit, historians from the Jetson's time will find that really strange. Oh wait. WE ARE IN THE JETSON'S TIME! Where is the Great Ganoo (or whatever Harvey Korman's character was called) when you need him? :D
