Not bad, not bad at all...:)
Oh, no significant extras except a lazy "Making Of" doc and a few other little tidbits(again, no commentary--for a guy so talkative otherwise, QT sure doesn't say much on his DVD's!)...
When I saw KB2 in the theater, there was a lot of grain which I assumed intentional and wondered, even while watching it, if that would transfer to the DVD edition without any significant tinkering. And it has! Kind of refreshing, really, though those who haven't seen it up close and huge will probably be complaining about it, but that's sheer ignorance, it's supposed to be there...
Overall, I'd recommend this one highly, as the sound mix, while not extravagant, is noisy enough when it has to be, fairly well balanced. The picture is the usual widescreen ratio as with V1(basic Panavision aspect, might have been shot Super 35, though, not sure). I can hardly wait to play the two volumes together soon, as one long movie to bask in...if nothing else, QT loves the idea of cinema, and while he borrows heavily, there's no denying his love for it, which translates to the viewer. That's refreshing, so few now even bother to try.

I saw this at Target today. I'm holding off buying either KB DVDs as I'm sure there will be the inevitable 2 pack with both films and gobs of extras. I'm getting sick of rushing out to buy DVDs (or CDs) only to be screwed by the release of a special edition.

If you buy Kill Bill 2 at BestBuy this week....you can pick up a free special edition cardboard box that fits both 1 and 2 into the box like it was a package.
Looks cool!:)

There is a deleted scene featuring a kung-fu battle between David Carradine and a band of thugs lead by Michael Jai White. The film was walking a fine line (okay, gleefully dancing back and forth over the line) between stylized and parodic, and this scene probably would have sent it too far over the parody line, but it's cool to see David Carradine in action in a recreation of classic HK film street fighting.

Best Buy goves you the slip case, KB 2 and Jackie Brown for $25 I believe.

Amen. When I was buying laserdiscs, it usually took them a year or more to come out with any kind of follow-up edition with all the goodies. I'll never complain about getting all the nice extras, but you're absolutely right. For example, I bought a copy of "Almost Famous" on the day it became available and I'll bet it wasn't 6 months later that the "Deluxe" Edition came out! Did I buy it? Well, yeah...I did.

I have friends that put off buying certain dvds just because they know I will be giving away my copy once the Special Edition comes out. Right now, they're waiting on RETURN OF THE KING and KILL BILL 2. Will I oblige? Of course. :)
I loved Entertainment Weekly's review of the KILL BILL 2 dvd, saying its fine but also asking if the average reader can wait until the SE comes out.

The good part about buying the bare-bones "Kill Bill" DVDs is that they will still be useful when the inevitable "deluxe" version arrives: the single DVDs present 2 very enjoyable movies, while the "deluxe" set will probably offer Quentin's original cut -- perhaps even the bloodier Japanese cut -- of the integrated film. I won't mind buying it again, because I'll be able to choose whether to watch them separately or as one movie.

Excellent point, Sean. Now I don't feel so bad -- seriously. :) Sometimes, I think the KILL BILL SE Director's Cut is inevitable, but sometimes I recall Quentin's comment re: PULP FICTION Director's Cut (made on the SE) -- "I didn't make a director's cut because I made the movie I wanted to make the first time" -- and I start to wonder if the KILL BILL SE will ever happen.
These DVDs seem vary sparse. Give them time to release a "Special Edition" DVD set with tons of extras.

I tend to agree, that the separate volumes--the movies as presented in the theater--will have their place, just as the Special Edition(very inevitable, that!), will, if done properly, be its own experience.

It took them 10 years for a PF SE. It may take 10 years for KB. It may be just in time for KB 3! :agree:

And in the meantime, you had to order the Canadian dvd of PULP FICTION to get any decent extras. I read today that Tarantino thinks that splitting KILL BILL into 2 movies may have ruined Uma Thurman's Oscar chances, so I think we may get the complete KILL BILL sooner than later in hopes that Academy voters might see it.

The difference between KB and PF is that Miramax let him release PF the way he saw it, and forced him to cut KB into 2 separate movies. The theatrical versions were not his vision. Expect a 3-hour epic. The question is when to expect it.

I read this thread earlier today, and when I was running errands after work, I bit. :) I originally thought that I'd want a SE with the "director's cut," but then I realized that I enjoyed seeing Parts 1 and 2. It made sense to me.
So I took advantage of Target's deal: V2 on sale for $19.99 with an instant savings of $5 off V1. Cost me $30, and I'm happy.

Quentin seems to have a real fondness for the full-blown "Kill Bill" saga -- he's already shown the unrated, integrated cut in Japan and at film festivals. I have full confidence that he will release his original vision on DVD.

I just watched my copy of the DVD last night. Great movie. QT's soundtrack's are fun. There is a medley of tunes called "About Her" by Malcolm McLaren. While I''m not a great fan of sampling, within the song is cool great sampling of a cover of The Zombie's hit "She's Not There".
Btw, Uma is easy on the eyes! :agree:

Am I the only person who thought the ending sucked the big one? They could have had the coolest sword fight ever with two of those badass swords. It should have been done at dawn on the beach, but noooooo.

I thought the ending was perfect; the big sword fight came earlier, and then, even earlier still, with the 88's...don't know what more, after that donnybrook, anyone would want!
Nope, the idea was to make Bill's death unique yet mundane....appropriately anticlimactic.
QT likes to use conventions and also defy them at the same time...

I agree. I don't see how QT could have topped the earlier sword play, anyway. Bill's death had to be simple.
I'm waiting for the four-hour combined version that will come out somewhere down the line. Tarantino conceived it as a three hour film originally, so it'll be interesting to see that as well as the deleted scenes that'll be added. Not gonna bother with either the mostly bare bones Vol. 1 & 2 releases...
I watched this one tonight on DVD. Great picture! One of the better looking transfers I've seen in a while. I enjoyed the V2 moreso than the first film. Less campy, and it let you catch your breath after heavy action.
Still not sure if the entire story lived up to the "hype" surrounding the release of V1 last year. It may take repeated viewings to truely appreciate.

I heard it from Quentin himself....he will be teaming-up with George Lucas to create a "Special Edition" Kill Bill that rearranges the ending so Uma gets the 5 point heart burster instead of David. There will also be cheesey new special effects in roughly four scenes to justify having to buy another dvd set. Then, two years down the road, they will create another "Special Definitive Special Yoda Edition" that will replace David with Yoda's stunt double. This will be hyped beyond comprehention until we have no choice but to buy another set.
Or not.
