While I've got very little in Sacd software,I've got thousands of cds.I find that the variable filter in cd mode set at position 4 which changes the brick wall filter to a smooth roll off seems to extend the highs slightly and give a more analog feel to the music.
This is not to say that it will make poorly recorded cd to sound well recorded, but it will make the player sound better. And you know that the better your equipment sounds ,the better well recorded material will sound.
If you've got the scd 777, scd1, even the 9000 dvd player, I believe they all have this variable filter.

Thanks Martinimaster,

I've also read about the various sound tweak filters and I think you are right that it is available in the new mid range models such as the ns900v (SACD/CD/DVD)

You know, the more I hear about this model, the more I want one!

Just waiting for that insurance check...and then I'll try it out!

Hi Togo
I'm not sure if the filter is availible on the new players,It's not even advertised on the 9000(first generation dvd/sacd).But if you get a chance , check it out . Play a cd normally, then flip the filter to position 4 .Makes it very analog sounding. On a DCC gold it's incredible.

Have just checked out the spec and some reviews...it includes reference to filter settings such as "brick wall", "soft" and "sharp"...so, sounds like it's there on the ns900v.

Thanks for the tip, look forward to testing it.

Martinimaster, thanks for tip.I've got the 777 and left it in the standard filter. Each filter takes a while to break in.

On small group acoustic ensembles (Miles Davis, chamber orchestras etc) I find that the number 3 filter give the music a "presence" that makes it sound more acoustic and immediate. Also solves a lot of listener fatigue issues on badly done CD's.

When I first got mine, I experimented with the various settings and settled on 3 also.

Hello,

I generally leave my SCD-1 set to Standard and on the rear, I use the fullbandwidth CUSTOM setting. When I switch digital filters, I find I prefer #3 for what it's worth.

Good luck, Chris

I've had my settings on filter 4 since I've owned the player .In light of the fact that most of the members feel that 3 is the setting to use ,I will try it again.
thanks all

I reply:

I only think that filter 3 is the most desirable on small group acoustic ensembles. It may not be suitable for Boston or Dylan etc.

martinimaster, thanks for the info. I have always used the standard filter setting on my '777ES, but I should try the other settings.

Sony has dropped the filter settings on more recent players for some reason. For example, the 'C333ES stereo SACD changer has the settings, but the newer 'C555ES multi-channel SACD changer does not.

While I use the standard filter setting for most CD playback (DCC included) I find that filter 4 has the most effect when I wish to reduce the harshness on some CD masterings. The other filters have their own qualities but 4 really helps in making the more "fly zapping" CDs listenable.

Anybody know, offhand, if the "rock-bottom" Sony SACD combo player (the NS500V) has the switchable filters onboard? For the price, my guess would be no. But, I haven't been able to find any detailed specs on this unit. Any info would be much appreciated!

I tried setting #3 for while and even though I found it sounding very good, I went back to #4. What #4 does is starts to roll off at 17,000 hertz but then extends to about 23,000 hertz therefore eliminating or reducing the brick wall effect ( smoother sound) Pease try it and let me know what you think.

Having now received my new Sony ns900v (upper mid range Sony model) I've been checking out the filters available on the audio side.

It dosen't have the 1-4 numbered filters of the high end models, but it does offer either "Sharp" (standard/up front sound) or "Soft" (warmer, analog sound) settings.

I'm starting to play around with these and will let you know how I get on once things have had a chance to burn in.

The scd777 filters are adjustable only by remote.

The button is on the top, left half and closest to the display and it says FILTER. You can find it next to the Digital OUT button. Now, if you lose the remote with the units on REPLAY, then you're SOL. You have to manually toggle the bandwidth switch on the back from STD to Custom, as this isn't on the remote.

Ok, so having been doing some burning in of my new Sony ns900v SACD/DVD combo, I've now been trying out the filters I have access to.

The SOFT setting (warm/analog) sounds absolutely wonderful...I'm getting very realistic sound with rich levels of detail...I've found the SHARP setting (brick wall) to be brighter and it also sounds ok, but not as pleasing to my ears.

Listened to the much underrated Stone Roses "Second Coming" redbook CD last night and it sounded just great through Grado SR60 cans on the SOFT setting...had to carry on playing music late into the night after that!!

Anyway, thanks again Martinimaster for your original filter tip..works for me!
