I recently saw Coltrane's "Blue Train" CD on MFSL. Worth getting? I have the "ultimate" reissue, but as far as I have read in this forum and in the blue note forum, it seems to be all but "ultimate" :-(
Thanks for your responses?
Tomcat,
The MFSL is pretty good. Alot better than the "Ultimate" pressing. Is the one that you have your eye on a UD1 (Japan) or a UD2 (USA)?

Dave, thank you for your response. I have no clue if it is UD1 or UD2. Gotta check it out. Is the UD2 that bad?
Tomcat,
Not with this particular album, but the UD1 is still a little bit better.;)

Hi Tomcat,
I had the Ultimate Blue Train and got rid of it upon getting and hearing the MOFI. I find the MOFI a warmer listen. I never realized how bright the UBT was until I listened to them both back to back. Needless to say the UBT went into the trade pile. Also, my MOFI is the UD2, and have not heard the UD1.
What I'm curious to hear is the RVG edition that has been released in Japan and pending a U.S. release. Hope they did a good job on that one !
Happy Listening ! -ED

I have the MoFi and the Blue Note 'Connoissuer Series' or 'Ultimate' issue. Ed, I have to agree with everything that you said here. I got the BN issue first and it sounds good, as most Blue Note's go, but the MoFi is much fuller and closer to that 'in the studio' sound. If you can get it...by all means go for it.
You really can't go wrong with such a super album...Coltrane, Fuller, Morgan, Drew, Chamber & Jones. Super soloists and some of jazz's greatest rhythm players!

I've got the Classic 24/96 DAD. Blows away any other digital version I've heard. Of course I can't play it in the car, but other than that...;)
