View Full Version : Billie Holiday on MCA
Steve,
This recording is unbelievable! Nothing, not even the original 78, compares to this, even though there are quite a few similarities. The bass on your mix brings out such a clearly distinct acoustic bass sound, it's like you're in the room with it and the top end is soooo smooth compared to the vinyl. You actually startled my wife with the big trumpet sound. Really nice job!;)
Is this the box set? And where did you find this jem? I've been looking for months....
What does it look like? I NEED this! :D
Gary,
Not the box set! It's a single album called Billie Holiday: From The Original Decca Masters on MCA/JVC and done by Steve. The number is MCAD-5766 JVC-501 Made in USA.
I got mine from ebay. I think it cost $4.00 US. :D
It looks like Half.com has some. The track listing is wrong though, if memory serves me.

Isn't this a great CD? If I remember correctly it's one of the first CDs I got, long before I knew who Steve was. This is probrbly the CD my wife plays more than any we own.
Let's just say that this cd stopped me cold from buying a possibly inferior MFSL.;)
Dave, does your CD look exactly like this CD on half . ebay . com??

Don't know about Dave but mine does
Gary,
Mine looks exactly like Mikes and the one posted, just has the tracks in a different order, probably the same with Mikes.:)
The track listing should be listed as:
1. Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do
2. Baby Get Lost
3. Them There Eyes
4. Keeps On Rainin'
5. God Bless The Child
6. Do Your Duty
7. You're My Thrill
8. Gimmie A Pigfoot (And A Bottle Of Beer)
9. Crazy He Calls Me
10. Now Or Never
11. Please Tell Me how
9. Lover Man (Where Can You Be?)
13. Good Morning Heartache
14. Solitude
15. This Is Heaven To Me
This is a great disc to have, even if you have the two disc "Complete Decca Recordings". The mastering on Steve's disc is a little better IMO. And yes, Steve, "This Is Heaven To Me" is a beautiful song. Haunting, really. I am glad I have this disc.

Yes, "This Is Heaven To Me". Great anti-commie song. Gordon Jenkins conducting. 1949, wasn't it or 1950? Hearing Billie singing a song like that (with all she went through in this country, "Strange Fruit" and all) was something of a shock the first time I heard it, but it's a moving song and I had to FIGHT to get it on the CD! Glad I did though.
