Watched "The Godfather" (1) over at a friends house last night. Even tho the transfer was great looking for a 30 year old film, I noticed artifacts galore. Lots of digital blips. It was to the point that I cant believe Paramount let it go out like that, unless it was my friends DVD player. I'm going to watch it on mine and see.

Anybody else notice this on THEIR player??

No, my copy is nothing like you describe??? What player was it? I have a few DVD players, my favorite is the Toshiba SD-3109...I musta played 1000 DVD's without a glitch!
My DVD looks better than my crappy VHS tapes:)

Perhaps it's a pirate sourced from the VHS.

Mikey,

Do you have the release that came as part of the boxset or the newer, single disc solo release? The latter is improved.

Here's a review of the boxset which mentions minor picture anomolies in the first movie:

Per Martin Blythe at Paramount Home Video, they are exactly the same disc. The single disc release is just disc one from the box set. There are no differences in transfer, mastering, or compression.

When the disc was originally announced, the scuttlebut was that it would be a new transfer, but that did not turn out to be the case.

Ken's right, the new disc is the same as the old disc (except of the silk screen).

Well, i know my friend bought the single disk.

I DEFINETLY saw alot of artifacts. Then again, he had a cheap DVD player. I'll have to watch it on my Pioneer 563A and see what it looks like.

Mikey, I watched my copy two weeks ago (actually the day before Brando passed away) and I don't recall seeing any artifacts. I'm not saying that they couldn't be there but just that I didn't notice anything standing out. The audio on the other hand has some break-up with the diologue which I suspect is just the nature of the source material, etc.

That is enlightening! Wonder why some online reviews praised an improved transfer
