My "Belafonte at Carnegie Hall" CD was stolen, so I am looking for a replacement. I wasnīt done listening to it.
So what is the best sounding release of this ?
I saw an SACD listed today, has anyone listened to it ? Is it any good ?
If you know a source for the Classic Records Gold CD, let me know :D

There was a lot of discussion of this disc, comparing it to earlier releases and so forth, on the Hi-Rez bulletin board.

You can run a search for the threads once you go there. And guess what? Different people have different opinions as to what's best!

There was some talk about the SACD being coming from a PCM master from the late 80s/early 90s. I lost track of that discussion, so i don't know if anyone tracked that rumor down to fact or fiction, but it kinda scared me off for the moment.

I just found this message, which suggests (credibly) that it is the same transfer as the stock CD. So the SACD is rather worthless.

Now, anyone compared the Classic Records Gold CD to the stock CD ?

The Classic version is a remix from the three track, it's not the original mix.
Not a bad thing, just different...It all depends on if you love your old RCA-Victor Living Stereo LP version or not.

I always thought that the MoFi aluminium version of "Returns to Carnegie Hall" sounded completely different from both the RCA and Classic CDs. What gave on that one Steve?

I don't have it any more - gave it to my father who used to play Belafonte when I was young. He really appreciated DCC's "Jump Up Calypso" for his last birthday - thanks Steve

petzi - The Classics gold CD is very good. I don't have an original RCA LP and it's been a very long time since I last heard it so I can't give an honest comparison. For the near future, if I were looking for a new copy; the Classics disc is the way I'd go. The catalog number is LSOCD 6006.

I was born in 1969...
I donīt mind if itīs not the original mix when the sound of the remix is closer to the original session tape resp. better than the original mix.
OK, so someone here know where to get that out-of-print Classic Records CD, or a copy of that :)
Why are three-tracks remixed all the time ? Wouldnīt it be a good thing if they just put the three tracks on a multichannel SACD or DVD ?

Why not just ask Steve to do it? He can include the original stereo mix on the CD and 2-track SACD layers and the 3-track on the multichannel SACD layer, while working his "breath of life" magic on them all!:D

A guy who has the SACD says it has the same chopped up master as the crap late 80s reissue CD.The only place you can get the complete original version is a 2 CD set released by BMG Germany(assuming the Classic reissue is OOP).

Pretty El crappo cover though - I have seen this as an import, and my father picked it up - haven't heard it in comparison though - he lives 4000 km away.
He has the original box set on Australian vinyl (played to death, literally), RCA US double vinyl and a BMG Germany CD.
Maybe try ebay to pick it up.

Thanks anyway :)
Maybe I can contact the seller directly.

I have the SACD which my ex-coworker picked up for me while in Hong Kong. It sounds better than CD in several ways, but lacks the detail and dynamics of the best SACD's. Far from worthless, I'd say it has benefitted from the DSD treatment significantly, though it may have come from the tapes via PCM. The confusion on HR Highway arose because the booklet includes all of the same info and dates as the CD. This proves nothing. Just look at the Monk Straight No Chaser SACD--you'd think it was a CD, too, judging from the booklet. But ya can't judge a book by the cover, nor should we judge this SACD by the booklet/jcard.
Heard the original RCA vinyl and it did not bowl me over as being much superior at all to the SACD. I wish we'd see more SACD's from BMG.

Hi,
Can someone let me know who is the mastering engineer for Harry Belafonte "At Carnegie Hall" Dpuble Gold CD issued by Compact Classic, Cd# LSOCD 6006?
Thank you

Since Classic chose not to put any mastering credit on there, we don't really know.
They must have had some reason not to give a credit, but I can't imagine what it is.

It's funny on such re-issue gold cd, there isn't credit to the mastering engineer. This apply also to Mobile Fidelity golds cd that I have (5 of them only). As for all my 16 DCC Golds CD, the mastering engineer is prominently displayed!

I never understood why some labels keep the name of the mastering engineer, (who is the last creative person between the music and us), a secret.
We should be able to know who is to be praised or who is to be blamed for the final sound, shouldn't we?
