I have some CDs that, according to the discography, were mastered by Steve, but do not have his name on them anywhere

The titles are:

Mel Torme - Encore at Marty's, New York (mastering credit to Quak Teck Digital at FDS labs)

Earl Taylor and Jim McCall - 20 Bluegrass Favorites (no mastering credit)

Mac Wiseman - 20 Old-Time Country Favorites (no mastering credit)

Curly Fox - 18 Old-Time Country Favorites (mastering credit to Ron Ballard)

Raymond Fairchild - 31 Banjo Favorites, Vol. 1 (no mastering credit)

Legends on the Garland label (GRZ-015), the inner ring has the date 09/06/88D. The mastering credit in the booklet is John Golden/K-disc, which is the same as the original Japanese pressed Dunhill release. (Yes, I have both. Just don’t tell my wife. She thinks I have a problem. I can't imagine why)

Steve, could you, would you, enlighten me? Please? :)

It just bothers me to not have your version because I know that somewhere, out there, is a better sounding version than the one in my hand. As a friend of mine put it, “Everyone needs a hobby”. My hobby is hunting down AND ENJOYING Steve’s work. Oh, and I know you have heard this before, but the new Judy Garland CD is great. I received mine last Friday. It gave me chills. Awesome! Thanks for caring.

Hi Evan,

How are things in Godzilla country? I'd love to see the original Japanese version of that film by the way. Have never been able to find it yet...

Back on topic:

Earl Taylor and Jim McCall--yes I did this one. Same for the Raymond Fairchild.

Not a clue about the Mac Wiseman. I don't even remember it! I'll have to ask Sam Passamano (Mr. Rural Rhythm).

Regarding "Legends", I did a version that was only out for a short time at the end of the run, after the original CD master was destroyed by accident. I used the same raw tapes as John, and I have NO idea how to ID a copy. I've never even seen one. Sorry.

Glad you liked the Judy!

Spring has sprung. The cherry blossoms have come and gone. And the traffic is a bear. The rainy season will be hear soon. In a word, wonderful. I have not seen the original Japanese version of Godzilla either. I will have to hunt for a used VHS copy now. This means I will probably spend HOURs rooting around used music/video shops looking for it. Darn. If I can’t find it I guess I could always pick up a few CDs and records ;)

After some more critical listening to compare the two copies I have of Legends, the Garland one seems like it could be your work. There is more bass and the vocals are smoother. Also, it is not from the same glass master. The Garland disc has indexing in the wrong place on “Ooby Dooby” and “Mean Woman Blues”. The earlier Japanese pressing dos not have any indexing issues. Even if it is not your work, it is still a great set of music. I was once in Sun Studio where all of those tunes were recorded. The “Tour Guide” explained to us how they used vintage 50's instruments as they sound wonderful, but they used modern recording equipment because the equipment used in the 50's was quite poor. After listening to your work with artists from that era, I would have to say that he was incorrect.
I just wish you could do a Sun Studio set from the master tapes that included Elvis. It would make a great Twofer. Sign.... :(

Any word on the Mel Torme? Who the heck is Quak Teck Digital?
