This may have been covered somewhere before, but I'm wondering how loud people listen? Has anyone ever measured with a dB meter?
What?...........what did you say?

Usually anywhere from about 75db-85db on speakers. I don't use headphones except for detail work when doing LP to CD-R work....well, I did listen to Prince' "The Hits" 3CD set last night through the cans and was again blown away by how well he put his songs together. Prince really IS a musical producing genius! Anyway, I got carried away and did listen a bit too loud. Very easy to do with headphones, which is why I usually shy away from them for normal listening.

Is this from the listening position or standing right in front of your speakers? Just out of curiousity, how far from your speakers do you sit?

My wife told me I could have the small room, so I am forced to listen nearfield, about four feet, in the sweet spot, at ear level. I have monitor-size speakers. My other problem is that there are too many hard surfaces with 90 degree angles. The only thing soaking up the highs are the LPs I have all over the place and a carpet. Not your ideal listening envirnment!

I consider incorrect volume to be a coloration. On recordings of live unamplified music i try to get the level as close to what i would expect the original levels to have been. It is guess work. For pop recordings I usually go with the voice at it's most natural sounding levels.

Also, all speakers compress at a certain volumes. Some are better at this than others.
