I have been watching some of TVLand's Flip Wilson marathon this weekend. While a lot of the comedy is dated (though I still love Geraldine), there have been many enjoyable musical guests. Some of what I've seen:

Aretha Franklin actually singing "Rock Steady". I'm guessing that the backing track, including background vocalists, was pre-recorded but it was obvious that Aretha was singing live because she wasn't close to her microphone at the beginning of the second verse and you couldn't hear what she was singing until she got closer to the mic again. It was a great performance.

Stevie Wonder lip synched "If You Really Love Me" and then sat at the piano and did a little singing/comedy bit with Flip.

Paul & Linda McCartney (& Wings?) - A promo video for "Mary Had a Little Lamb". An early promotional video, no doubt, and an obvious lip synch to the record. Still fun to watch.

Melba Moore sang "Don't Rain on My Parade", though it was likely a lip synch. What a voice! (Check out the Steve Hoffman mastered Razor & Tie best of if you are not familiar with her.)

The Osmond Brothers lip synched "Yo Yo" after Flip introduced them as his "soul brothers." That was really funny. The Osmond's outfits were VERY '70s and very funny.

Louis Armstrong was on one of the shows they showed last night, but I've forgotten what song he sang.

There have been many others, too.

Coming up later this half hour is the Jackson 5.

It was cool seeing Bobby Darin in a non-singing role.

The one with a young Bill Cosby was great.

I saw Sammy Davis Jr sing "Candyman." He sounded great. Then he did a segment of tap dancing styles.

Great show!

Yesterday I caught one with Curtis Mayfield, obviously lip-syncing "Superfly." I would much rather have seen a real live performance!

P.S. When Flip is in character as Geraldine, holy crap, what's a man doing with legs like those???

He also did a lovely version of "Mr. Bojangles" on another episode.

Also really dug Taj Mahal. Now *that* was a performance you don't see on network TV anymore.

I didn't get to see most of them, but I caught the one with the Temptations and Redd Foxx. It's going to be on the air nightly, so I can catch them all.

I used to watch this with my family as a kid. But, by biggest memories of it was the theme music and the Geraldine Jones routine.

It had some odd moments as well. I'd never thought I would ever see Pat Boone and George Carlin in comedy skits together, but there it was on The Flip Wilson Show.

And how about the Gospel performers he had on the show? You don't see that much on TV anymore.

I caught this one, too, while channel surfing. Wow, what an eclectic gig!
