I always wondered is there any sonic difference between Parlophone Gold (first press) and Yellow/Black (second press) Beatles Please Please Me LPs or it's just a label variation? I guess they should sound similar due to the fact that Y/B LPs were pressed only couple of weeks later. Anybody has made direct comparison?

You are speaking of the black and gold first pressing, correct?

I heard one once. It sounded terrible. Of course, it had groove damage and was in mono.

But, I doubt they would have recut the parts just because the label was being changed.

That's right, Steve, black and gold first pressing PPM. As I understand from your comments first and second pressings are similar and you don't like the sound at all. Mono version, at least. Am I right? I'm quite surprised cause my Y/B mono PPM sounds good to me. Do you mean there are other early Beatles LPs you like more? I know you love stereo Parlophone Beatles for sale. Any other preferences?

Well, I like all of the early Parlophone stuff. Problem is, the Gold press I heard just didn't sound good. Not because of the mastering, but because of the wear that the LP had on it.

I love the sound of all the tube cut Parlophones. They have a real sound of their own. Sometimes the tracks toward the label suffer from inner groove distortion, but in general, they are all fun to listen to.

I wish I had 'em all mint. :(

When did they stop using doing tube cutting on the Parlophone Beatles pressings? I have a yellow/black Rubber Soul that sounds quite nice, but it's not a first press.

Er...I thought the Parlophone PPM was substandard compared to the German pressing...

I think Steve was talking about the German stereo version being better. On this thread I think he means the mono.

P.S. Which Canadian pressing is the killer stereo 'WTB'?
