View Full Version : How 'bout more female mastering engineers?

Wth the hideous sound of a lot of the Astleys and Inglots and many other of the male species, would it not make sense to have more female mastering engineers (assuming there actually are any now) doing serious mastering and re-mastering? In an interview in the early 80's, Shelly Yakus said there should be more female recording engineers, that they hear differently than a man does, they mix with a "warmer" sound. I know the recordings I own done by Susan Rogers, Lenise Bent and Leanne Ungar are anything but shrill and bright. Something tells me that a female mastering engineer might be just what the doctor ordered. We might get more balance and taste. Or a good male working with a good female as a sonic "team". Thoughts?

A female as scrutiny would be a phenominal idea..... Let the male engineer concentrate on the knobs and what they mean, and let the lady find the natural musical feel, both working until they're happy.
Then let's watch the divorce rate rise... ;)

Naaah, girls don't like playing with knobs. They just want one, and the switch to turn it on. Simple, effective!
Anyone wanna ask how my weekend went? :p Muhuhahaha!

Sckott,
How was your weekend? My girlfriend likes the ON/OFF switch and the volume control. She could care less about the rest.....

My wife always used to put the LOUDNESS button on. Drove me nuts. I eventually went inside the amp and busted the lock spring. I guess she was just used to having things larger than necessary?

Beagle,
Maybe she likes "smiley face" EQ?

Susan Rogers engineered many Prince albums starting with "1999".
I've heard many records engineered by women. No difference.

LOL!:) Very creative!
There's Darcy Proper at Sony Music Studios in New York. She's a talented engineer. She mastered the forthcoming (May 21, 2002) "Sinatra In Hollywood" 6CD box (produced by Chuck Granata & Didier Deutsch).
Regarding female mastering engineers-Just found out Emily Lazar will be
mastering the new Bowie album "Heathen". I did a search on her and she has recorded as an artist called The Angel. She is also the CEO of a mastering house called The Lodge in NYC. She uses the Avalon AD2077 for EQ and states
"I rely on the AD2077 mastering equalizer for it's
incredible depth and elegance. It is the most versatile
EQ I’ve ever used. The integrity of the stereo image is
both wide and true and the tonal range is extraordinary.
I can achieve great control in the bass, while keeping the midrange smooth and precise...and the high-end air seems to go on forever!"
Sounds like she has it right now let's hear the record.
