As promised, this week's list is from the Fabulous Fifties. Unfortunetly, the Billboard Top 100 Charts which are the source for these posts did not begin until August of 1958 so we miss quite a few of the great pioneer rockers early hits. By the time our story begins, corporate homogenization has already begun to creep in as you will see.
Today's chart is from May 4, 1959.
1. Come Softly To Me...................................... .The Fleetwoods
2. The Happy Organ................................... ......Dave "Baby" Cotez
3. Sorry (I Ran All The Way Home)......................The Impalas
4. Pink Shoe Laces................................... ........Dodie Stevens
5. Guitar Boogie Shuffle................................. ...The Virtues
6. (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I.........Elvis Presley
7. I Need Your Love Tonight..............................Elv is Presley
8. Tell Him No...................................... ...........Travis & Bob
9. Venus................................... .....................Frankie Avalon
10. Turn Me Loose................................... ........Fabian

So what's wrong with a little "corporate homogenization"?
Got 'em all covered--including "Pink Shoe Laces" thanks to Steve's work on the Too Cute DCC compilation.

I don't think I've ever heard #8. They were on Liberty, right?

Steve, It's funny but that was the only one I didn't remember either. I usally know all the songs I post and generally have copy in one format or another. So, I looked through my song database and found that I own a copy! One problem with having hundreds and hundreds of CD's and Records is that I often can't recall if I have something or not, hence the database. The original version was on Sandy 1017. It charted for 13 weeks (Top 100) but this was it's peak at #8. The CD that I have it on is The History Of Dot Records - Vol. 2. I have to give a listen this evening, maybe that will jog my memory.

In researching Steve's question, I realized I had made a major error in my original post. These songs are from April 4, 1959 not '58. As I mentioned in my introduction the Top 100 charts didn't begin until August 4, 1958 so obviously April of that year was long gone. I just had '58 on my mind when I was submitting the post. I have corrected the post and apologize for the error.

Don't worry Grant next week we'll be in the seventies again as promised. You'll be in more familiar territory.
I didn’t recognize one tune.

As I stated to sgb last week, it's all just part of what generation you're in and what you grew up with.

Grant, I bet if you heard #1 and #6 you'd slap your forehead.

Actually, I do have #1 and #6. I have "Come Softly To Me" on a Time Life compilation and as far as Elvis Presley goes, I was never a fan of his music and wasn't too familiar with his work until just a few years ago, compliments of Steve's excellent "24 Karat Hits!" CD. I'm still not all that big of an Elvis Presley fan, but I have four CDs of his hits, and a few minor hits. I may have #6, but I never heard it.
Elvis was not played in my house growing up, and I never heard him on the radio until the 70s.

I have heard nearly all of these songs although I am only a younger listener as this is one of my favorite eras in popular music.

All,
I was 8 when these "tunes" were popular. The Fleetwoods recorded some very listenable and good-sounding records. The Happy Organ later served as the inspiration for a number of musicians and songs including Let's Dance by Chris Montez in 1962. Sorry was a doo-wop classic and really popular with teens. Like Dave I had forgotten about the Travis & Bob cut. I found it on the same comp as Dave. I do not have much affinity for the Dodie Stevens, Frankie Avalon and Fabian cuts. They are historic, however.
To our younger forum members, I highly recommend the Fleetwoods...great singing, arrangements and very well-recorded.

Why does it suddenly feel like we're watchin' a Superbowl game? (as they raise their glasses in victory):D

Dave,
Because sometimes just being able to enjoy the simpliest pleasures in life is a big event to be celebrated, much like music!
Bob :D
Bob,
Does that mean we are simpletons?:D

Dave,
Absolutely not! It means we are human beings full of passion, for living!
