View Full Version : Rolling Stones Decca bootlegs, anyone?

Has anyone heard these boots of the 60's and early 70's albums? They come in digipacks, most in mono, with the original English artwork, a handful of bonus tracks each, and supposedly made in Germany by Decca (the exception is one boot containing stereo tracks, and supposedly mimics a rare German LP on the "Hör Du" (not "Zu") label).
Most Stones boots sites claim the sound is excellent, even the All Music Guide raves on some of the titles, but I have my doubts.
Could they be no noised needle drops? Mono reductions and straight clones of the well known London CD's? Or maybe some entrepeneur had access to ABKCO's vault?
Given that Allen Klein is seemingly willing to reactivate his long dormant catalog (witness the recent Sam Cooke CD, who'd have thought?), it doesn't seem such a good idea to go for the boots right now, but man, they sure are tempting! Any opinions?

They are pirated CDs, but done beautifully. The sound and packaging are excellent. They are NOT clones of the London CDs. They're needle drops of the mono LPs, and the mixes are noticeably different on many of the tracks. I'd say get one and see if you like it. The biggest differences are on the earlier material, but I was even impressed with the differences on later stuff like Beggars Banquet: the vocals on Sympathy for the Devil were drier and more up front.

I have CDRs for both the mono "Aftermath" and the mono "Beggars Banquet", and they both sound fine to my ears, and I definitely enjoy the different mixes. As Douglas stated, they are supposedly taken from the original UK mono vinyl.

Knowing Mick's dislike of outtakes and alternate versions, could Abkco do it any better than these bootleggers have ?

Generous and pertinent bonus tracks, great sound, interesting original covers !

I've bought a few of these and give them a thumb's up. The stereo collection sounds quite good, with the exception of "Have You Seen You're Mother Baby?" Don't know what happened with that track.

If the reports of the Stones Decca catalog being remastered turn out to be true, we can hope that they put both the stereo and mono mixes on each CD, but I really doubt it.

Sergio, didn't you ask this exact same question last August?

Larry speaks with tongue in cheek and foot in mouth - Well Patrick it doesn't take a genius :) to see that there are 3 times as many members now. BTW who asked me anyway. :(

my 2 cents...

I don't mean to sound rude, but we covered the question in this thread in detail more than once already.

Here's an old post by David Goodwin on the thread from last August:
Honestly depends. Several in the series are absolutely useless, as they just take the audio from the ABKCO discs (I think No. 2 has the intro-stereo-rest-mono Heart of Stone, for example...). Not worth it. Some of the others, like After-math, BUttons, Majesties, and BLeed, aren't wonderful, but are significantly better than previous mono versions that I've heard. BTW, DON'T buy any of these for the bonus tracks, as they're often from OLLLD sources (for example, Beggars has the skipping Downtown Suzie, instead of the upgrade from the Allen Klein Collection).
And, BTW, these aren't flawless transfers, as someone mentioned...Lady Jane has a huge, unmissable skip in it, for example.

Well, I bought a few and although the packaging is great, the sound quality for the ones I have seems pretty average, not to say poor. The only one I would absolutely recommend is the 'Stereo' one (that's what it's called). However, I must point out that the ones I tested were the early ones: "1", "2", "Around and Around" - given my experience with those I was not tempted to try the later ones. Take a look at http://www.recordpark.com/ - you should find the whole selection on sale there

I purchased the entire series of Stones boots that you are refering to, other than the Rolling Stones and No. 2 they are all pretty bad. Plus the bonus tracks are lame and have all been heard before. I'm still not sure why I bought them since I have all the original UK Stereo vinyl editions and most of the mono ones (only missing Buttons and Aftermath in mono). These CD's were maded from noisey vinyl and then were heavily no-noised. About the only thing that's nice are the digipacks themselves. Do yourself a favor and leave them alone.
By me:
Anyway, as Scott said, they're a mixed bag -- some digital sourced, some vinyl sourced. Quality varies pretty widely. You do get the UK lineup for Buttons, which I much prefer.

I wouldn't advise paying actual money for them (except maybe Beggar's, cause the LP is rare and expensive). Some of the bonus tracks are fun.
[I also mentioned the digital glitches on Gimme Shelter, but I didn't quote it here.]

By Scott:
Ok, those Digipacks are made of a hodgepodge for collectors. A few of the cute ones that seem neat are mostly the "Roling Stones/Rolling Stones No. 2" twofers (London rips from German and Japan CDs), there are others made from other companies like the Beggars Banquet Mono digipak with the cheezy art fold and the detestful sound quality. Yes, some of them are from LP and to boot (no pun intended) they soaked them in Soundforge noise reduction to be hip. Yep, they took the "suck" knob and cranked it.

Are these easy to find?

You have something against beating a dead horse? Heck on Southern California news we get things like: This is believed to be the ambulance that brought him to the hospital. :(

Can I take my foot out of my mouth now?

Ridiculously so. These things've SPAWNED...I see more of these digipacks than I do most other bootlegs nowadays.

This company's also made at least two Who CDs that I know of (Who '66, which is a bad variant on the stereo AQO with a LOT of fake stereo and other ****, and a mono TWSO which might be worthwhile), and tons of Beatles discs. Honestly, while a few selected mono discs provide a nice public service, in general one should avoid.
