Look what I got in today's post. Glad to know they're back. It helps also that I am a Patricia Barber fan. They have released Cafe Blue, Modern Cool & Night Club. Cafe Blue is all that I have purchased so far...I wanted to check out the quality...

This SACD is a hybrid release. DSD/Ultradisc UHR Gain 2. I just burned backup copies of the redbook version. I thought that it would have a multi-channel mix on the CD but it doesn't, only stereo SACD.

I haven't done any comparisions between the retail release and the redbook MFSL mix yet. I've always thought that this was a very good recording to begin with. The MoFi sounds REALLY good though.

I have only had a chance to do a quick comparison between the two mixes on the SACD but there's a definite difference between the two. The SACD mix is amazing! Full spectrum!

I'll try to post back after I've heard it a few times and can give a better assessment

This release makes me wish that DCC would come back with product like this with Steve at the SACD helm!

Man, they're still using that crappy format for their front cover?

How many times do you have to use the "original master recording" logo?

I agree...but they're getting better...the album shot is twice as big as before...

Alex,

Do you have the Premonition gold redbook cd for comparison?

The "original master recording" is their logo. It was on every lp and cd that way. Yes, it does take away from the "original" design, but it's mofi's trademark. Simple as that.

I think what Matt meant was that one "Original Master Recording" rather than two on the cover would suffice...

Dave, I only have the aluminum Premonition release. About the time that I found out there was a gold release I saw the announcements about the MoFi and never gave the gold a second thought after pre-ordering.

Alex,

Dang, I was hopin' you had it because I do and am really curious as to how it holds up against the MFSL. The Premonition gold version is better than the Preminition Alum. though. Grumph!

Hopefully someone who has my version will dare to take the plunge and report it here.

Great album, hope you enjoy.

Many have not heard Patricia Barber before and I am sure they are wondering why MoFi would pick these 3 titles up for their grand return. I have to fully recommend her music.

Granted that I really love jazz...she is not one of your run-of-the-mill jazz artists. I hate to put a tag on it but 'alternate jazz' would come close. The jazz roots are definitely there and she does croon some great straight forward jazz standards here & there but there's alot more happening here than most would think. For instance, the 'Cafe Blue' album has some avant-garde (Yellow Car III), celtic (Romanesque), Accapello (Wood Is A Pleasant Thing To think About), cover tunes (Ode To Billy Joe / Taste Of Honey) and some 'jazz'.

I believe there's a little of something for everyone and I suggest that some internet sampling might be in order for those not informed. 'Cafe Blue' & 'Nightclub' have both won awards for best audiophile recordings.

Foremost, even if you do not like her music, let's give MoFi a chance to get back on their feet and hopefully they'll fill some audiophile reissue gaps that have been dreadfully missing for the past few years!

I agree with MagicAlex. I wish them the best. MFSL takes a lot of abuse here, much of it deserved, but they also produced some very good stuff over the years. At least they are up and running and perhaps they will bring some badly needed quality back to the reissue biz.

Don't get me wrong - I wish Mofi and anyone else crazy enough to get into the reissue and/or audiophile business all the luck in the world. I think anyone who does this is doing it at least partially as a labor of love (not that money isn't nice). I guess my point is that I will consider Mofi back when they license and release some well known titles. I hope they do it, I hope they sound great, I wish the best for Mofi's wallet and my ears! :D

If I threatened to hold my breath, would that help? (he said, shutting his eyes and clicking his red heels, saying "there's no company like DCC, there's no company like DCC...)

Why couldn’t one be passionate about money?

Dave

I suppose so, but I'd be alot more willing to bet that the true passion lies with what the money can buy.;)
