Has anyone but me got 2112, Signals, and Moving Pictures on MFSL and also the 20-bit remasters and done a serious comparison between them as I am curious to know your opinion?

Dave, sorry to barge in on your post but, you are the complete Rushmeister, aren't you! :D

I can't make a direct comparison but my 20bit Permanent Waves doesn't have anyway near the dynamic impact of the MoFi Moving Pictures. The 20 bit is different but I still like it.

Yes Pigmode I am the Rushmeister, been a fan since 1973 before their first release.;)

Andy, once you get past some of the overabundance of hokey lyrics, you might find a three piece band with a might powerful sound consisting of a great drummer and an awesome guitarist, and a very good bassist/vocalist/keyboardist as well. They also put on a helluva show.

I see. I'm impressed. Gosh, I was all hung up about DSOTM about that time. Did you ever see Peart on the revolving platform which allowed him to seemlessly alternate playing between two different drumsets within the same song? ;)

Pigmode,

Yes actually I did in fact here are the years I saw them live

1974 (Backing up Nazareth) First album
1975 ("Headliner, don't remember the back up band") Fly By Night
1976 (" ") Caress Of Steel
1977 (" ") 2112
1978 (Max Webster was back up Universal Juvenilles) A Farewell To Kings
1979 (" ") Hemispheres
1985 (" ") Grace Under Pressure
1988 (" ") Hold Your Fire
1992 (I believe the back up band was Our Lady Peace) Roll The Bones.

And I remember seeing the Power Windows tour as well but can't remember what year it was and don't have the album to refresh me.

It was really  seeing Rush live at the height of their peak, especially due to the fact that they are better live than in studio.

I have all Mofi's and the regular remasters... Bob Ludwig's remasters sound better (IMO)

I'm have to disagree with this one (for the most part)... I have done a direct comparisons between the Gold CD's and the 20 bit remasters. I don't think there is a single one of the 20 bit remasters that are aren't remastered with a "smile curve"

The Rush MFSL Gold CD's were some of the first Gold CD's I ever bought (I think the only gold cd I purchased before them might be Yes-Fragile on the Atlantic Gold Standard Series)

I had all their albums on the original cd's that came out in the late 80's, also owned vinyl and cassette... I thought the MFSL's were a big improvement to those original CD's.

When I started buying the 20-bit remasters in 1998 I thought I heard more detail (and I still do), but some of them are way to shrill to me, especially 2112. Moving Pictures isn't quite as bad. Signals is probably the least offensive to me, but "The Weapon" off the Signals MFSL Gold CD has a verse ripped out of it. I'd say that Signals is the only one of these three that I listen to from the 20 bit remaster on a consistent basis.

I can hardly stand to listen to the 20 bit remasters of Permenant Waves and Hold You Fire anymore. They are very bright and I get fatigued very quickly from them. Hemispheres 20 bit remaster is an improvement, that album has always been exceptionally muddy to me.

BTW... Power Windows came out in the Fall 1985, I was entering my senior year in highschool. ;)

Every studio album by Rush since that one has come out in the Fall as well.

Yes, that's true... more details and a little bit shrill, but that's the way Bob Ludwig works!

I agree with Drew. I have all three Rush Mofi cds and have done direct comparisons with the current 20-bit remasters. 20-bits have more detail but do not sound nearly as 'natural' as the Mofi's. The hardest decision to make was to keep the Signals Mofi over the 20-bit. Signals 20-bit is nice a punchy and normalized with respect to the other releases. Mofi Signals sounds significantly quieter than the respective releases of 2112 and Moving pictures, but overall is much better to listen to in the long-run.

You almost described King's X there.

Count me as another who's compared the MoFi Moving Pictures to the remaster and vinyl (if I can mention that;))

The Mofi sounds much more like the vinyl than the remaster. The remaster sounds like most modern remasters-bright & sassy, and very much digital.

It's an improvement over the 1st release, but you need the MoFi if you love that album.

I've not comared Signals & 2112 to the remasters 'cuz I never bought those remasters- but 2112 sounds very good on MoFi.

I wouldn't say the Rush remasters sound bad, they're just not all they could be. Caress of Steel sounds pretty good to me, and quite close to the vinyl (although my vinyl copy's a bit ragged).

I actually kinda like it with the missing verse (kinda makes the song new again).

I've always wondered how in the world that could happen though - that mofi would receive a master that has missing vocals. My only guess is that that particular verse was added later as an overdup onto what's considered THE master, and for some reason the boys sent mofi what had previously been considered the master. However, wouldn't that mean that the mofi version is one generation younger than the one that we all consider THE master?

p.s Patrick - I'm also a big Kings X fan

I've compared the 2112 and the Moving Pictures. In both cases I prefer the MFSL, especially for 2112. Moving Pictures is very close - although I feel the MFSL is better, I'm sure I couldn't reliably tell them apart in a blind test.

My advice to anyone wanting to try the MFSLs is to start with 2112 and see what you think.

I haven't compared my MFSL Signals to the remaster, but the MFSL is at a very low sound level and that may turn a lot of people off, along with the infamous "missing lyric".

Ooooooooh Audiogirl is a Rush fan! Excellent!

:D

Don't think Steve's 2112 would sell too well because the market is saturated with cheap remasters. BUT a righ rez release would take the cake.... and eat it too!

I have 2112 Mofi and Remastered. Never AB'd the two. Will keep both, no matter what.

Dave Rushmeister (now we know your last name! ;) ), what is your comparison results?
