View Full Version : Replacement tubes for a Dynaco PAS-2... how much??

I took delivery on the PAS-2 that I'd been waiting for, and although the unit itself seems fine, I seem to have been given the... er-- Royal Sampler of tubes for it. At the price I bought it for, I'm not complaining (too much), but obviously, I need some NOS Telefunkens for this (four of them), as well as another 12X4.

What am I (realistically) going to have to spend for these, and does anyone have replacement recommendations for the 12X4 tube?

Thanks again, all... :D

Jim McShane has 12x4 tubes, NOS. Check out his
page:

Jim is a great guy, have bought many tubes from him.

Congratulations on getting the PAS-2! You'll like it.

Almost forgot--

Jim's page is pretty big. Do read what he has to
say, but to get to the 12X4 listings go about half-way
down the page, or use whatever "find in page"
function your browser supports, searching for "12x4".

Good luck!

Telefunken 12AX7's are around $35 to $45 each.

Hmm...

That certainly seems much cheaper than what I was lead to believe, for NOS tubes...

..although I'm sure it seems outrageous to people who bought them 'way back when...

Do you have a source that's quoting that price, Bobbit?

12AX7's are plentiful. You can find some other brands made in Germany, UK....ect... all very good. Take a look on eBay with just your tube type number. Tons!

Market value follows suit on how people bid-war on eBay for tubes. Look at Mullards, Telefunkens, RCAs and other off-OEM brands like SHIELD*, Amperex, National, Philips... Type, supply & demand, condition... all relevant. eBay is a great place to find the perfect tube.

Try to choose a dealer that tests used tubes. You don't want to buy somehting that'll last a year. A tube tester on your end is recommended for those people who have sets with more than 3-4 tubes... ;)

OK, After looking into it, new old stock Telefunken 12AX7's in box are going for $50 to $80. I personally don't care about boxes and if they test well used they sound great and you can get them for $30 to $45.

Slightly OT, Mr Cairo, but you should check out the Van Alstine "kit" to upgrade the PAS-2 (which turns it into a "super PAS". It's basically a total redo - new circuit boards, volume/balance pot, selector switch, ground plane jack set, output buffers - and made a huge difference, imho.

Years ago I had Van Alstine rebuild my Dynaco ST150 (into a mosfet 240) and I LOVED the result.
