Are these the same as the Vintage Music CDs, just with different art and different ordering (ie, I think vol 10 of Vintage Music would be vol 1 of Vintage Collectibles). Same mastering?

Someone may have "further" details, but here's what I've observed.

There was an original lp series, if I recall correctly, that had "one" volume per lp.
The "original" pressings of the CD series combined 2 volumes per CD: example (for Steve's Mastering)...1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8 and 9&10. Volumes 11&12 thru 20 were NOT mastered by Steve, as you probably are well aware (I have a suspicion that certain songs were...but I'll let Steve comment!).

Later CD pressings/reissues used "different" artwork and, more importantly, went back to single volume format...using only 10 songs per disc!

Until a recent thread, I never even knew about the re-released (10 song) CD with "similar" (NOT the same) artwork to the 20 song originals. I think these were called Vintage Music. Later, these must have been re-done again (why?) using the artwork that I still see around depicting a "old car scenario" on each volume (still 10 songs, probably no change on content though). The later are still available for around $5.99 at Circuit City and Best Buy in their various artist/oldies sections! These are called Vintage Collectables.

I know I haven't nailed a definitive answer on the mastering question between all these variations...I can only guess that the "early" volumes use Steve's mastering on these "scaled-down" re-issues. Other than my curiousity, I have NO reason to get the later packages...the originals which were made in Japan, are fantastic!

I have all the "long boxes" too! :D

Well, I just picked up vol 2 of Vintage Collectibles. It would seem that these are indeed Steve's CDs - Born To Be Wild has the cold ending, for example.

I've noticed that these CDs are indeed still in print - CDNOW has them, and I'd assume other online retailers have them as well. It would have been nice to have gotten the twofers, but these are pretty cheap as it is.

FWIW, I believe the track order has been shuffled around a bit. Here's how vol 2 stacks up (which was vol 9 of Vintage Music):

1. Midnight Confessions
2. Rescue Me
3. Eve Of Destruction
4. Dawn Of Correction
5. Born To Be Wild
6. Incense And Peppermints
7. Monday, Monday
8. That Acapulco Gold
9. One
10. Our Day Will Come

Does Magic Carpet Ride have a cold ending as well? Or is that just on Born To Be Wild?

The Steve mastered version of Magic Carpet Ride has a fade ending. It is the most dynamic of the all the versions of this song that I own and it has more deep bass than the other versions! Definitely, worth seeking out!

When I posted, I just followed your spelling, Heh Heh!

Also, if THAT is the track order on YOUR volume 2, it is IDENTICAL (order) to volume 9 of my copy of the original Volumes 9 & 10.

Seriously, if you are looking for others in this series (and can't find 'em) try Circuit City. They also have the 10 song "45s on CD" series for "cheap" that Dennis Drake did...if you don't already have these! I suspect this stuff is out of print and is being reduced to clear them out!

I have wondered about the issue that Luke raised. Your response prompted me to take a closer look at my VM CDs. My VM Vol.s 1/2 and 3/4 are dated 1986, say "Made in the U.S.A." and have catalog #s on the discs of MCAD-577 JVC-509 DIDY 1295 and MCAD-5778 JVC-510 DIDY 1304 respectively. My VM Vol 7/8 (which contains the Radiants "Hold On" - great song!) is dated 1986, says "Manufactured in Japan" and has a catalog # on the disc of MCAD-5805. Are all of your double VM CDs thru Vol.s 9/10 marked "Manufactured in Japan"?

My VC Vol.9, which is the same as the VM Vol. 5 except "You Better Move On" is replaced with "I'm Leaving It Up To You", is dated 1986 and has a cat. # of MCAD 22179.

Welcome to the forum! I just took another look at my Vintage Music CDs Volumes 1 thru 10. They ALL say Manufactured in Japan for MCA Records, Inc. on the disc. I bought these shortly after each came out (back in 1986).

What's strange is that my Vintage Music, Volumes 15 & 16 and 19 & 20 (the "evil" Non-Steve mastered discs, that I still scooped up!) ALSO say Made in Japan for MCA Records, Inc. on the disc. I think these were cut-outs when I bought them! The VM Vols 11 & 12, 13 & 14 and 17 & 18 (that "I" have) say Manufactured in USA for MCA Records, Inc.

I'd say (hypothesizing) that "ALL" Vintage Music volumes (at one point) were Mfg in Japan (I just missed 3 of the Jpn manufactured releases).

Most of the other information that you provided applies to the ones I have , except for MCAD-5777 (you just omitted a "7", right?). Also, I don't find the DIDY #s on my packaging.

You are also right, The Radiants Hold On "is" a great song...are you listening "Mr. Oldies Radio Playlist Creator"?
