finally out on DVD, Sean Connery and ChristianSlater's first big film is finally here, set against the back drop of a medieval monastery, and based on Umberto Eco's very complex novel, the film all takes place in a monstery where some murders are being committed. But it is the film atmosphere, and other wordliness that steals the show.

One thing that makes this film so unique is the characters ACT and TALK and THINK like people would have in that time; so many films that take place in such "ancient" times apply modern speech patterns, vernacular, unrealistic behavior and superhuman powers to characters (THE PATRIOT comes to mind immediately but there are many others...MOST others, frankly). It's a long film, not without flaws, but one worth your time to visit.

PDpenny,
You hit the magic of NOR right on the head. Everyone looks and acts like it really is the dark ages..I mean you really suspend your belief, and enter the picture with a kind of off center excitement...and say..Ya..this what it must have really been like.
why this picture was so overlooked it beyond me.

I must confess I've never bothered to watch the movie. The book however is another story, I've read it more than once. Foucault's Pendulum is another great Umberto Eco novel.
I agree - Pendulum is outstanding... would probably lend itself to a screen version even worse than The Rose, because there is very little action going on;).
I would see anything with Sean Connery in it at least once; his presence on screen is enormous, even when it is just the voice (re. Dragonheart). I could have probably done without a few sillier films that he has been in like Entrapment or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen though.

"The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" - I had the "pleasure" of watching that twice on a plane recently. Normally I'm very easy to please regarding the in-flight movie, but this one was terrible. I could not watch it a second time. "Daredevil" was in the same bucket.
By contrast, "Master and Commander" was even more thrilling the second time, as I was able to concentrate on some of the peripheral interplays and details of the story-line that had passed me by.
