Did Universal ever issue a formal statement as to why this was recalled at the last moment a year ago before its scheduled release?

Great news! Maybe this release will bring a new appreciation of the movie. I haven't seen it in about 15 years. At that time, even though I had watched it several times up to that time, the other people who were watching with me had never seen it before and they thought that it was incredibly lame. I don't like the new cover of the DVD though, looks like they are trying to modernize it.

I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get a copy of last year's issue from Amazon. They continued to honor purchases throughout the weekend that it was announced as being pulled, days before the scheduled release date.

I still don't know why it was pulled - there was nothing wrong with it that I could find. Looks and sounds great.

Thanks for the link. I have been waiting for this one. My old vhs copy bit the dust years ago.

I think this film is great fun. I also injoyed the first Jeepers Creepers movie. It is totally different, but a few scenes reminded me of the classic "Duel".

Great!!!! I've been waiting for two years for them to finally release this on DVD. One question, I realize this movie was originally aired on TV here, but why isn't it being released in widescreen??? It was released theatrically overseas and I'm sure that it wasn't shot in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. Comments anyone?

Comments? Pretty sure it was shot 1.33:1, not widescreen. There's been some controversy, but I've not seen any real evidence it was filmed widescreen. Projected that way in Europe? Yup, but I think it was simply cropped.

Hmmmmmmmm that's interesting. By the early 70's I didn't think anyone was filming anything in 1.33:1. But I guess it would make sense, since it was originally aired on TV.

Bingo! Why shoot something widescreen when it's meant for TV? (Back in the days before widescreen TVs, that is...)

True, but wasn't this going to be released on DVD at one point in widescreen, before Universal pulled it from it's release schedule?

There've been so many almost-releases of "Duel" that I can't recall! I think there were some rumors it'd be widescreen, but I think it was all a mistake. I honestly don't remember...

Will this release be the "new and improved" version that Speilberg did or is this the original version of the movie as seen on TV when it first came out?

Amazon now shows a later release date. Maybe it's been delayed.

Will this release be the "new and improved" version that Speilberg did or is this the original version of the movie as seen on TV when it first came out?The DVD 'almost' released last year contained the extended version with the extra footage inserted for overseas theatrical presentations, so it differed from the US aired version in that respect. It also features a newly re-done 5.1 soundtrack, both DD and DTS. Obviously that differs from the original aired version as well.

The one I got looked great and sounded great.

My dvd case just shows it is 90 minutes. Is the dvd actually longer than that? I haven't opened it yet. I would guess it is the same version that's on the LD, right?

Yes, the same as the LD version with the newer soundtrack. The original MOVIE OF THE WEEK format on ABC was 90 minutes long WITH commercials, so the original telecast movie was shorter.

It was lengthened with cut footage to pad it out to 90 minutes for international theatrical release.

Over here in Australia Duel is shown on TV once a year, during the non ratings season late at night (midnight), the same goes for 1977's The Car (James Brolin).
I just bought a new copy of Duel on VHS (1Hr, 31 mins) for $7, I don't know where it's made in but it looks like a genuine copy, not a pirate.
