View Full Version : Do dented or pushed in speakers affect sound or life of speaker?

I just opened up my new Infinity Intermezzo 2.6 speakers today, and I noticed what looked like someone had pushed in the one tweeter with a pen. While there is no hole, it is maybe and 1/8 inch deep. I can not detect any high frequency determents due to this. The other speaker is fine, and there seems to be no difference in sound. I am going to contact the dealer to see if he can replace it or both speakers, but if he can't, is anyone awhere of any short or long term problems due to this. These speakers are discontinued I am told, so I may have to send them back to Infinity for a new tweeter. These are also the ceramic coated aluminum speakers (CMMD).

Was it shipping damage? Are they new or used? It's the responsibility of the seller to arrange for compensation for this. Were they packaged correctly? I would either return them or have the repair arranged. It would drive me crazy looking at that damaged tweeter and wondering how that happened. You're call but that's what I'd do. I hope they were insured...

Edit note: Sckott's right too. If it doesn't bug you and they work fine then enjoy. I get too anal about these thing's sometimes...

When a tweeter is damaged like that, the worst thing that will happen to a cone is it will throw those high frequencies a little weird, and some of the delicate highs might suffer from the disformation of the cone.

But if you back up and listen to high-hats in Jazz Cds and it sound fine, leave it alone. You can also find replacement parts for just about any speaker, but let it lie if it sounds just fine. Nothing's going to blow up in yer face. Todd's basically right though. See if you can right the wrong easilly?

I say "remain anal" about this.

(Hmmmmm that didn't sound to good, now, did it? Sorry....)

Get 'em fixed now. The longer you wait the more scarce the replacement parts will be. And of course the warranty may expire - if there is one.

Are these ceramic coated tweaters? .... paper and other types of cones can be repaired or pushed out. The problem is finding someone who knows what they are doing! Just thought I'd mention it!

I just remembered this:

Take some masking tape (or duct tape) .... a small sliver... and try and stick & pull the dent out gently? Only problem is, if it dents with a sharp corner, the cone MAY pierce a hole.

I've done this before to a boom box. Pulled the nasty dent out clean. Tweeter was polycarbonate, not paper though.

To back up what Sckott says,

I've done this with the ol' duct tape on paper cones as well with 100% success. You just have to be real carefull.
